Introduction
Religious Figure Dog Names in Pop Culture
Lucca, which is a female form of Luke, was a very special dog. She was a German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix, also known as the Malinois X who was an explosive-detecting dog in the United States Marine Corps for over six years. In fact, she was in more than 400 missions with two trips to Iraq and one to Afghanistan and had not one fatality during her watch. She found countless bombs and other explosive devices as well as guns, ammunition, and more than 40 rebels.
She was originally born in the Netherlands and started with the Israeli Defense Special Forces in Israel. After six months of training with an American team there, Lucca was brought to the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona to train for detecting explosives. Trained as a specialized search dog, she was part of an elite group of dogs who were able to work off their leashes, so they could go on ahead of the troops to make sure they were safe.
In her six years with the service, she found over 40 insurgents, explosives, and ammunition without ever having a single human fatality. She protected thousands of lives and found more explosives than any other dog in the service at that time. On her final mission in Afghanistan, in 2012, Lucca found a 30-pound explosive device and was searching for more when an IED detonated right under her.
Her handler on this mission, Juan Rodriguez, thought she was dead, but he was able to get to her. After administering first aid, she was airlifted to a hospital in Germany where she underwent surgery. Lucca lost her front leg in the accident, but after rehabilitation, she was up and running around again. She was retired and went home with her first handler, Chris Willingham and his family in California.
Several months later, Lucca was awarded the Dickin Medal by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), which is the highest award for valor that any military animal can receive in Britain. Lucca was the first United States military dog to get the medal. The medal was created by Maria Dickin, who was the founder of the PDSA.
According to Amy Dickin, the spokesperson for the PDSA, awarding the Dickin Medal to Lucca brought more public attention to the program than ever before. In fact, Lucca’s biography has been turned into a book called “Top Dog: The Story of Marine Hero Lucca” written by Maria Goodavage. Willingham said that Lucca continued to be a loyal and loving friend up until the day she passed away in 2018.
