Many music enthusiasts see an old Peanut’s episode with its iconic black and white beagle named Snoopy and they instantly think of the rock/rap musician Snoop Dogg and his backup musicians. Snoop Dogg has always been associated with dogs because of his kennel of 20 plus Pit Bulls that he houses at his home in Los Angeles. His bevy of dogs and his name makes most people remember Snoopy. In fact, in some interviews, Snoop Dogg has been asked if his name was derived from Snoopy of Peanuts fame and the answer is a resounding 'yes'. When Snoop Dogg was a baby, his mother thought he looked like Snoopy from Peanuts, so she started calling him Snoopy and Snoop for short.

Peanuts started out as a comic strip in the daily paper back in 1950. It was illustrated and written by Charles M. Schultz. It became the most popular comic strip ever created. There were 17,897 strips published in 2,600 newspapers throughout 75 countries. The readership of the comic strip was estimated to hover around 355 million. The comic strip became known as the longest written story in history. It appealed not only to children but also adults who would look forward to reading the short snippet every morning in their newspaper.

Snoopy became a key character in Peanuts. He was beloved by adults and children alike. Soon stuffed animals and toys bestowing his image were widely marketed and well received. It was not uncommon for a child to have a Snoopy lunch box, book bag, tee shirt, or blanket with the image of Snoopy and his pet bird Woodstock emblazoned across it. Even Snoopy’s dog house image became recognizable and symbolic of the small cartoon Beagle.

The comic strip was the story of a group of kids and the main character was named Charlie Brown. His dog, Snoopy, was also one of the main characters. Eventually, the comic strip was converted into television specials and even more people fell in love with the black and white Beagle named Snoopy.

Many people started to name their dogs Snoopy and their children Charlie because of the effect that comic strip had on people’s lives. Even the command module and lunar module for Apollo 10 was called Charlie and Snoopy.

Now the name Snoop or Snoopy is experiencing an entirely new reemergence as many people bestow the title on their dogs not in honor of the Snoopy of Peanuts fame but instead after the American singer Snoop Dogg who has left his mark on not only the rap and rock industry but also as a songwriter, television personality, advocate, record producer, and actor.
