Introduction
While Shameless has certainly received its share of criticism, there’s little denying its acclaim. Winner of several top-tier awards, the show remains Showtime’s longest-running original scripted series in the network’s history, which says a lot about its success. Despite the dark topics it covers, the show is an imaginative yet realistic look at what it means to be a family, suffering through various stages of dysfunction. And at its core, it provides quality entertainment with characters that for many, often hit a bit close to home, making it just as insightful as it is often lewd and outrageous. And the best part is, its massive cast of characters make for the perfect dog-naming fodder.
Shameless Dog Names in Pop Culture
Of all the characters to come out of Shameless, let alone most other long-running shows of its type, it’s hard to deny that Frank Gallagher isn’t one of the most larger-than-life attitudes in all of television. Regardless of the situation, he can almost always be found ranting about nonsense to anyone that will listen and ending up in some pretty ridiculous situations, and thanks to the fantastic performances of acting legend William H. Macy, both are key to why he’s so incredibly entertaining.
But Frank isn’t the only over the top character with the name. There’s another Frank that has helped to further the popularity of a franchise in a similar way: with attitude.
Outside of maybe Otis from the 1986 kid’s classic film Milo and Otis, Frank the Pug may be one of the most famous of his breed in movie history and it’s easy to see why. To be fair, Frank is technically an alien, but his Pug-based disguise still helps him qualify.
Originally introduced in the first Men in Black movie back in 1997, Frank quickly endeared himself to audiences all over with his famous first line “If you don’t like it, you can kiss my furry little butt!” — a reference to the mistaken identity that leads Agent J to believe the corpse-like man selling keys next to Frank is really the informant he and Agent K are going to see. From that point on, Frank helps point the two agents in the right direction as to finding the galaxy they are looking for, all with a fair dose of classic New Yorker attitude.
The original performance was enough to have Men in Black II director Barry Sonnenfeld give Frank, whose real name is Mushu, a larger role in the second film. At one point, Frank even becomes a partner to Agent J, although J gets annoyed with him quickly since he never stops talking and has a penchant for singing poorly. Frank remained popular enough to even be featured in the animated series that was introduced shortly after the first film hit theaters.
Unfortunately, Frank did not appear in the third film as he had passed away, but the impact he had on the director, audience and other actors was enough to have him featured in photos, on billboards in the movie, and even on the cover of the video game that was released a few years later. He remains one of the most popular characters of the franchise.
Shameless Dog Name Considerations
When attempting to come up with a good Shameless inspired dog name, it’s usually easiest to start by making a list of your dog’s most defining traits. Consider their looks, personality and individual quirks, as each one can provide a potential link to a character from the show.
For instance, if they happen to be large, tough, or intimidating-looking but are truly soft-hearted, then the names Kev and Ball would certainly fit the bill. If your dog’s intelligence often gets them into trouble, then the name Lip would be perfect. If they are always trying to manage other dogs and people around them, then maybe Fiona would be a good choice. If they are particularly musical, then maybe Pfender would be a decent choice. If you’re just a fan of the show and want to keep it simple, then the overarching family name Gallagher would be an easy pick.
There are plenty of directions you can take the naming process and there are just as many characters to base them on. Try to trim the list down to some of your favorite characters and those with the strongest related traits, then see what seems to fit best. If you need any further inspiration, there are plenty of seasons to watch for a refresher.
