Introduction
The Siberian Husky is an ancient breed developed in Russia by the Chukchis, an indigenous people. The dogs were bred to transport things behind them, which enabled the Chukchi people to do well in a very difficult environment. In addition to the breed’s strength and endurance, the Siberian Husky is a friendly breed developed to live within the household of his family. The breed has a thick double coat which allows the dogs to do well in the harshest of conditions. The Siberian Husky can be found as a sled dog in harsh climates, as well as a household pet. Due to their unique traits, strong work ethic and storied history, there are a number of names that make a good match for your Siberian Husky.
Siberian Husky Dog Names in Pop Culture
There are quite a few famous Siberian Huskies that have allowed for the breed to become well known outside of the harsh climates for which they were bred.
While the Siberian Husky is well-known for competing in dog sled races in Alaska, their biggest contribution in America was in the face of a diphtheria epidemic in the small town of Nome in 1925. With about 10,000 people in the region at risk, a serum had to be acquired and brought back to Nome. Twenty sled drivers and over one hundred sled dogs, most of which were Siberian Huskies, travelled 658 miles in dreadful conditions to the town of Nulato, where they obtained the medicine and brought it back to Nome. While the trip should have taken twenty-five days, it was made in just under six. With such poor conditions, the driver could not see even the dogs closest to him. The lead dog of the last leg of the journey, named Balto, earned great recognition, however it is important to note the contribution of all of the dogs who made the journey successful.
In addition to their real-life adventures, multiple movies feature the Siberian Husky. The compelling 2006 film Eight Below will keep you on the edge of your seat, featuring eight sled dogs left at a polar base after their trainer has to be evacuated due to a heavy snow storm. While the plan had been to immediately return for the dogs, weather conditions did not allow for that to happen and they were left alone for six months. The emotionally-charged film is the story of their efforts to survive on their own.
The 2016 documentary Sled Dogs takes a look at the breeding and care of those dogs, many of which are Siberian Huskies, that are raised for the purpose of dog sled racing. The adventurous film Iron Will, made in 1994, tells the story of Will who is left to take care of his mother and their land when his father dies. In need of money, he joins a cross country dogsled race where he will have to spend long days in harsh weather traversing difficult terrain with his team of dogs. A lighter film featuring Siberian Huskies is the family-friendly 2002 film Snow Dogs, where a dentist inherits a team of sled dogs and has to learn the trade or lose his team.
Siberian Husky Name Considerations
When you bring a new Siberian Husky into your life it can be challenging to find just the right name for your new canine pal. As you look for a name that fits his many talents and friendly disposition, there are several directions that you can turn.
A name of a well-known Siberian Husky can be appealing, particularly if you see some of the same traits in your new friend that were seen in his namesake. As dogs of the breed have thick double coats that allow them to best handle harsh weather conditions, names that bring to mind cold, winter weather are appealing when seeking a name for your pal. Such a name will bring to mind your canine’s ability to handle such conditions, whether or not he will ultimately encounter them.
As the Siberian Husky is typically a friendly pooch, you can also consider names that represent his good nature, even if they have nothing to do with the cold. Since the breed is one that is good at hard work, names that reflect his strength and endurance may be appealing as well.
