Introduction
No matter how you shake it, the little blue creatures only said to be three apples tall are considerably bigger in real life. Since Belgian comic artist Pierre Culliford ever put the lovable, blue, Phrygian hat-wearing characters on paper in a comic strip in 1958, The Smurfs have turned into a massive franchise spanning comics, television shows, movies, video games, theme park attractions, cereal, dances and even a themed Ice Capades performance. They’re also incredibly easy to keep track of, as the aptly-named characters usually hold either a very direct or very ironic name that describes the most poignant part of their personality, making for the perfect dog-naming fodder.
Smurfs Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
While Smurfs are Smurfs and people are people, the Smurf universe was definitely endowed with a significant number of other creatures. Throughout the original comic strips and cartoon series, the Smurfs saw regular animals, hybrid animals and more often than not, mythical creatures and all sorts of magical ones in between, but many were also only featured in one episode, two at best, and outside of the Smurfs, Gargamel and his cat Azrael, there was little consistency with many of the others.
Even the first dog to appear in the series was short-lived. Bluster, the pet Bulldog of carnival performer Bombast, made his first appearance in Season 1. During the course of the episode “Sideshow Smurfs”, Bluster quickly becomes jealous of the Smurfs, insulted by the idea that his master, who once employed him as his main attraction performer, is more interested in his new projects. Eventually, the dog is lured into helping them escape, but in true Smurf form, it ends up unsuccessful. Only when Gargamel comes into the picture do the Smurfs devise a plan to finally escape, once Bluster and Bombast end up chasing Gargamel and Azrael into the forest. It was Bluster’s only appearance and stood as one of the only dogs appearing on the show until years later.
During Season 5, however, that narrative finally changed when Puppy was introduced. Originally called Homni-One after the original owner, Homnibus, a wise, old, magical friend of Papa Smurf’s, Puppy was given to the Smurfs as a gift. He ends up being one of the only other recurring characters throughout the remainder of the second half of the Smurfs cartoon, entering the picture in Season 5 and lasting, in spotted episodes, until Season 8, the second-to-last ever produced. The show itself finally ending in late 1989. He is generally a well-loved character by both viewers and the Smurflings, whom he gives rides to and plays with when he’s not getting them twisted up in plotlines.
The only other dog to exist in any meaningful facet was Elmer, the non-canonical member of the Winslow family from the late Smurfs movies. Although Elmer originally saw the Smurfs as a threat when first introduced, he eventually befriends them, going so far as to play video games with them, joining in on Guitar Hero as the kick pedal operator. His only other appearance comes in the second film, where he’s seen wearing a party hat at Blue Winslow’s 4th birthday party.
Smurfs Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Like mentioned in the intro, the true beauty of The Smurfs is the fact that almost all of their names directly correspond to the most prominent part of their personality, whether they’re particularly good or bad at their respective calling. This makes for a fantastic list of dog names, each of which can be applied the same way to your canine as they are to The Smurfs.
For instance, if you have a dog that’s lazy, Sleepy or Slouchy would both be apt fits. For a dog that constantly cleans or preens themselves, the name Vanity would be ideal. Artistic, clever or creative dogs would be well-suited with the names Poet or Painter, while those who love being outdoors would be great candidates for names like Fisher, Hunter or Tracker.
Of course, you can always go beyond the traditional names. We’ve left the two most popular Smurfs off the list, as Smurfette and Papa Smurf are a bit more limiting than most others, but there are plenty of well-defined villains that have existed throughout the Smurfy storyline, so if you need any further inspiration, look down our list and see if anything sparks your memory. Otherwise, you can always go back and read old comic strips or watch the movies or cartoons for some seriously smurfy inspiration.
