Sri Lanka Dog Names in Pop Culture
A group called Embark rescues and rehabilitates street dogs in Sri Lanka. Upon receiving a call about two hairless puppies that had been seen roaming the streets near the University of Jayawardenapura in the city of Colombo, the team jumped into action. While the two dogs appeared to be sisters, and at around four weeks too small to be without their mom, their mother was nowhere in sight. Naming the puppies J1 and J2, the team went to help the puppies right away. Unfortunately, catching them was no simple task. As the puppies had not had human contact and may have experienced abuse, it was very challenging to get close to them. According to Harini Suraweera, Embark’s marketing coordinator, “they were so scared, and they were ready to bite and run to protect each other from possible harm”.
Eventually the puppies were caught and they were taken straight to the vet, where it was discovered that the sisters had tick fever, anemia and mange, which is a skin condition that leads to hair loss. One of the pups was limping due to a leg injury. The rescue team were confident that that pups would recover, having proven their strength while alone on the streets. Learning to trust people, was, for the pups, the bigger challenge. As they were afraid, they tried to avoid any contact with people and would cuddle together to protect themselves while in the hospital, something that they likely did while living on the street. Over time, the pups realized that they were safe and they slowly began to seek attention from people. And they enjoyed playing with other puppies who were at the rescue center. After about three weeks receiving care at Embark, their personalities began to come through and they became playful. Upon recovering from their health issues and becoming more comfortable with people, the pups were put up for adoption. Staff at Embark were not sure if they would be able to find a home together; fortunately, a family contacted the group stating that they were looking to adopt two puppies together. After visiting during Embark’s adoption day, the family took the pups to their forever home. The pups’ new family includes a young boy who adores them and they have a large yard to play in.
