Introduction
1987's Street Fighter changed everything. Capcom released the arcade game taking a gamble – it was their first fighting game ever. Little did they know that it would blow up to become one of the most well-known and iconic franchises in all of gaming. The funny part is the original game was the least popular. As the series progressed, it picked up more and more steam. But the first one holds an important spot, having incorporated attack buttons and command-based techniques, things which eventually became standard in all fighting games. So, if you want to name your dog after Street Fighter, you've come to the right place!
Street Fighter Dog Names in Pop Culture
Let's be honest, there are a lot of dogs in Street Fighter, but none of them are memorable. In Street Fighter, it's all about the human characters, and their fights (it's in the name), so the dogs take the back seat. Ask anyone who vividly remembers playing these games growing up, and you'll get a mixture of "wait, there's dogs?" And "I think I remember that..."
But Sabu is one of many dogs in the series. In this case, it's Guile's daughter's pet, as seen in Street Fighter II's ending. Guile himself is a major in the United States Air Force.
There's also Shiro, a white dog that shows up four times in Final Fight. He barks in the background of the Bay Area stage. Coincidentally, he's Sabu's best friend. In the SNES and GBA versions, the dogs would give you a bonus if you stood in front of them.
Sakura Kasugano, the girl with a huge crush on Ryu, has a white dog that shows up in her stage in Street Fighter Alpha 2. He also shows up in Super Street Fighter IV. The only catch is he's such a small role, that no one really knows his name.
In Super Street Fighter IV, Abel found a small white dog in the street too. It was a rainy night, so he takes the poor little dog in. Abel goes on to enter the Shadaloo Intimidation Network (S.I.N.) tournament, leaves the puppy with a friend for the time being, and then names the dog and buys him a collar afterwards. All of these dogs make short little cameos, of sorts, and no one really quite remembers them, but they're the sweet dogs of Street Fighter.
Things took a turn in 2006's Final Fight: Streetwise. In the game, German Shepherds are enemies, showing up inside the Bijou Hotel. In fact, they bite Kyle Travers' (main protagonist) ankles and legs. They also jump on him. These dogs all have names though: Baron, Bobo, Coco, Comet, Dodger, Killer, Junior, Ripper, Spott, Trouble, Rusty, Nightmare, Rex and Pain. Notice how some of the names are cute and fluffy, and others give off an entirely different vibe!
There were also dogs in the background of some of the stages in the game, such as Ken's stage in Street Fighter Alpha 2, set in London. They also make an appearance in Street Fighter III: New Generation, in the Run-down Back Alley.
Street Fighter Dog Name Considerations
Clearly, you're here because you really want to name your dog after Street Fighter. Whether or not you've already adopted the dog, it doesn't really matter... to a point. If you haven't adopted the dog yet, you don't know what his or her personality is like, and you don't know things like preferences, favorite toys, likes and dislikes. All of this is valuable information when naming a dog, because it shapes the idea in your head of what this dog is really like.
But when you already know that you want to name your dog after a well-known franchise, well, that limits options. It cuts out the need for a ton of information. As long as you have a general idea of which names stand out to you, you're pretty much in the clear!
There are still some helpful things to consider though. For instance, maybe think about which Street Fighter character is your favorite, and why. Think about which characters in general stand out to you. Maybe you remember selecting the same character over and over again when playing the arcade game? In other words, stick to what feels familiar. It's this sense of familiarity that will make the dog's name feel like home.
