Syria Dog Names in Pop Culture
As war tore apart the city of Aleppo in Syria, many people have been displaced. The same has happened to dogs. This is how two dogs, named Loki and Lucy, wound up living at a zoo. The two Husky-mix pups, believed to be about four years of age, were found on the streets after their owners had to quickly flee the city and were unable to take the pups with them. Locals rescued the pups and kept them at Aalim al-Sahar, or The Magic World, a zoo so that they could be safe. Unfortunately, like the city as a whole, the zoo and its animals were starving.
Locals did what they could to help and ultimately Four Paws, a rescue, was able to get permission to rescue the remaining animals there. Zoo residents included bears, lions, tigers, hyenas and the two dogs. All of the animals were taken across the border and Lucy and Loki are recovering at a rescue center in Turkey. Lucy, apparently is very friendly and active, while Loki is somewhat shy. Both have begun a socialization program and are doing well on a leash. While there is no timeline for their being ready for a forever home, rescuers are focusing on helping the dogs be physically and mentally ready to be a part of a family.
Another dog who received attention in Syria is an unnamed Belgian Malinois military dog. The pup was with an Special Air Service team of six that had been ambushed by Jihadis while they were on a routine mission in Syria. The dog not only fought off the Jihadis, but killed three of them to ensure the safety of the team members. Belgian Malinois are known as a fierce and brave breed.
It was not long after the team left their convoy that they were ambushed from all sides. The soldiers were out of position, making it very challenging for them to return fire. The dog’s handler removed the pup’s muzzle and directed him toward a building from where they were under attack. After hearing screaming and shouting, the firing stopped and the ambushers fled. Upon entering the building, the team saw the dog next to a dead gunman. Amazingly, the dog was barely injured in his effort to save the lives of the six SAS soldiers.
