Introduction
Owners with big dogs often like to celebrate their canine companion’s size and for good reason: their height and strength can provide many advantages, from performing more physically intense tasks to being that much more intimidating to potential intruders. And while there is a significant list of great names for individual breeds such as the Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane, which can stand 30-35 inches tall respectively (and up to 44 for record holders!), sometimes it’s just plain fun to honor a dog’s height. We’ve come up with a thorough list of some of the tallest people, places, and things to name your new addition after.
Tall Dog Names in Pop Culture
When it comes to gentle giants, few hold a candle to the likes of Zeus, who was and is still considered the tallest dog ever measured in modern history and holds the Guinness Book of World Records title for the world’s tallest dog.
At only eight weeks old, the Great Dane puppy was taken in by owner Kevin Doorlag and his wife Denise, residents of Ostego, Michigan, back in 2009. Even with the dog’s noticeable size and his owner’s background as a veterinary technician, Doorlag and his wife had no idea what they were getting into and yet fell in love with his loving gaze and affectionate nature nonetheless.
When he finally grew to his full size, Zeus stood at a whopping 7’5” when standing on his back legs and a still-massive 44 inches at the withers. Although he “only” weighed 155 pounds, he still consumed 30 pounds of dog food every two weeks and for the sake of comfort, drank water straight from the kitchen faucet. He was so large he also needed a van for transportation, which was a common necessity given the duties he eventually undertook. The most common questions the Doorlag’s were asked? Whether he was a horse or dog, where his saddle was, and if he slept on the bed — which he did.
Despite his size, he was widely known for being incredibly sweet and gentle with whoever he came in contact with. It was this wonderful disposition that inspired Doorlag to have Zeus trained to be a therapy dog, a job he took to with considerable zeal. Zeus and the Doorlags would visit nearby schools and hospitals and bring joy and company to those that needed it most. He even reached a level of local celebrity that had strangers approaching him and asking about him when he was out with his owners on walks.
But like many of his breed kin and former record holders like Giant George and Titan, his life didn’t last long. Many Great Danes average a lifespan of around 8 years with a maximum of 12 but likely due to his incredible size, Zeus passed away just two months short of his sixth birthday. But not only did he leave behind memories for his family like any well-loved dog would, he also touched the lives of so many others, including everyone from those who would spot him walking down the street to those he visited personally in an effort to bring them more joy.
Tall Dog Name Considerations
The greatest consideration when choosing a tall dog name is mostly the association you would like them to have, which is best based on their personality or your overall tastes.
For instance, if you’re heavy into comic books, there are plenty of monstrous characters to choose from. If they’re notorious for misbehaving, then they might be better suited with the name of a tall supervillain, such as Solomon or Mongul. If they’re a great defender or a regular do-gooder, then Starfire or Iron Man would be more appropriate.
For anyone into sports, there are nearly endless choices available, although the most famous and tallest will be the most universally recognizable for others outside of yourself. For instance, in the NBA alone, you could pick Kareem, Wilt, Chamberlain, Mutombo, Yao, Parish, Ewing, and Shaq, most of whom played for different teams and had unique personalities and quirks you could play off of for even more appropriation.
Then, of course, you have the acting clan, which includes the likes of Lurch (Carel) and Aasen. If your dog is particularly hairy on top of being tall, then Mayhew, after Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca, would be the perfect choice, the same way Burj or Khalifa would fit a Saluki.
There are tons of ways you can go, just make sure you find something both meaningful and either fun or clever. It may sound like a tall order but with enough research and inspiration, we’re sure you’ll find a title for your tall tailed tyke in no time.
