Introduction
The second largest state when it comes to both area and population, Texas is located in the South-Central part of the United States. In honor of its former status as an independent republic, and a reminder of its fight for independence from Mexico, Texas is known as the “Lone Star State”. If you live in the state of Texas or have at some time in your past and think fondly of the state, choosing a Texas inspired name for a new canine pal makes a lot of sense. Every time that you call your new friend’s name you will be reminded of the place that is special to you.
Texas Dog Names in Pop Culture
Texas dogs are easy to find in pop culture. A well-known Texas pooch is Skidboot, who was considered the “world’s smartest dog” prior to his death at 14 in 2007. Skidboot performed with his owner, David Hartwig, of Quinlan, Texas and had a great talent to do whatever it was that he was told. The dog appeared in local fairs as well as on television, to include the Oprah Winfrey Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, Inside Addition and The Animal Planet. Most popular was Skidboot’s trick with the stuffed ball. He would be told by Hartwig that he was to fetch the ball at the count of three. The ball would be thrown and Hartwig would start counting. He would call out one, two and then choose random numbers. Skidboot did not go get the ball until he heard the number three.
Skidboot came to Hartwig, who was a horse shoer, when he mentioned to a ranch owner that he had not gotten a Christmas gift for his wife. The ranch owner gave him a puppy to give to her. Hartwig wound up going back to the ranch and trading the original puppy for the one he would ultimately name Skidboot. The puppy was uncontrollable at home, tearing into everything. Hartwig tried to teach him to lie down and found that Skidboot would imitate him in the things that he would do. Realizing that his pet was pretty smart, he made a video of the dog’s tricks and sent it to “Pet Stars”, where he and Skidboot won $25,000. This led to television appearances, a short movie and a book. Skidboot had to retire after being kicked in the head by a horse, which caused him to become blind in one eye.
Another well-known Texas dog is Reveille, who is the mascot for Texas A&M University. Other than service dogs, Reveille is the only dog on campus that is allowed to enter any campus building. Tradition states that if the pup barks in class, the class is then cancelled. Reveille has her own cell phone, as well as her own student identification card. The dog is cared for by the Corps of Cadets Company E-2, which is known as the “mascot company”. A sophomore in the unit is named the “mascot corporal” and is responsible for her care. The mascot corporal will bring the dog everywhere, including class and dates.
Texas Dog Name Considerations
When it comes to choosing just the right name for your new canine pal, it can be hard to decide. For someone with a special connection to the state of Texas, a name that brings the state to mind might be the perfect fit. Each time that you call the name of your pooch, you will be reminded of a place that you love.
Another reason you might decide to choose a Texas-inspired name is if your dog reminds you of a particular dog from the state (whether in breed, appearance or personality). For example, your dog may be similar in appearance to the Texas A&M mascot (named Reveille), leading to your choosing to name him after the well-known dog. Perhaps the large size of your dog makes you think of the large size of the state of Texas. There may be something about the state that holds special meaning to you, which could inspire the perfect name for your pooch. Fortunately, the state of Texas offers plenty of name ideas for someone looking for just the right name for their new canine buddy.
