Thailand Dog Names in Pop Culture
A man by the name of Michael Baines takes a lot of his time caring for stray dogs in Chonburi, Thailand. For five plus years, he has been feeding stray dogs on three routes. Over time, the dogs have learned to trust him and to expect him on a daily basis; his assistance is why many of them manage to survive, despite Thailand not always looking out for its dogs. Baines stated that many in Thailand will hit the dogs with sticks, stones or machetes, poison them, throw boiling water on them, even using knives or guns to kill them.
Baines was born in Scotland and his family moved to Sweden when he was two. He spent some vacation time in Thailand and in 2002 found a job and moved to the country. He is now employed as the chef and general manager of a restaurant in Chonburi. He will feed all of the dogs once a day, making 17 stops on three routes. On his way to work he will stop eight times and feed 30 dogs. After breakfast, he makes a second run, making eight or nine stops to feed 30-35 pups. Six more dogs eat outside of his restaurant and four or five more are fed on his way home at the end of his workday. Their meals consist of dry food and boiled rice with vegetable oil and bouillon, as well as a boiled chicken, pork and fish mixture. Each month, a powder will be added to prevent the dogs from getting worms, ticks and fleas. Baines either pays for the food himself or with funds from donations.
Baines mission began when a dog appeared at the back of another building where he worked, covered in wounds and with multiple infections. She had also just given birth. Baines started to feed her and began to see how the dogs were suffering as well as how friendly they were. Things went from there. Over the years he has been feeding the dogs, he has been able to get more spayed and neutered and has also given antibiotics to dogs who are sick. When a dog is particularly vulnerable, he will keep the pooch at his restaurant while seeking a home for it. He has a 100 percent success rate on these adoptions.
Baines has nine dogs of his own at home, all rescues from the streets of Thailand. One of them, named Coke, is in a wheelchair for dogs. Baines took the dog into his home after the dog's spine was broken as a result of vehicular trauma.
