Timor Leste Dog Names

Even when you come up with the perfect dog name relating to Timor Leste, you then have to think about how other people are going to take it. Will you have to dive into a history lesson every time someone asks how your pooch got their name? Sometimes, to make life easier for yourself, it’s a good idea to connect a Timor Leste dog name with a famous pooch in pop culture. One such dog is Ana.

Ana and Anna are the names of two dogs who had significant roles to play in the world. They relate to Ana Maria Pessoa Pereira da Silva Pinto, a prosecutor in East Timor. The dogs and Ana from East Timor both serve their countries, connecting them beautifully.

Ana, the first dog, was a search and rescue Golden Retriever. She was born in 1995, lived until 2008, and was one of the first dogs deployed to the World Trade Center site. She was also the first graduate of the Search Dog Foundation training program.

Ana started life as a puppy born to a backyard breeder. She was supposed to become an assistance dog but proved too bouncy and energetic. The Assistance Dog Institute executive director Bonnie Bergin thought she might be the perfect pooch for a role in search and rescue.

Bonnie got in touch with Search Dog Foundation’s Wilma Melville who arranged for Ana to train in California. She became the first certified Fire Department Disaster Search Canine. Upon graduating, Ana went to work for the Sacramento Californa Fire Department with Captain Rick Lee. Alongside helping at the World Trade Center search, Ana worked at the collapsed building site in Sacramento and the aftermath of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina.

Ana also appeared on Animal Planet and the National Geographic Channel’s TV show called Dogs with Jobs. She died of cancer in Captain Lee’s arms in 2008.

Anna, with a different spelling, was also a dog that played a significant role in the world. She became the first dog to survive pulmonary bypass surgery which was experimental at the time. The success of Anna’s operation meant doctors were able to perform open-heart surgeries with success on babies who were born with blocked pulmonary arteries. Anna then paved the way for a 1950s film about the success of the surgery.

While Ana and Anna are both unique dogs that played pivotal roles in helping people, so too does Ana the East Timor prosecutor General. Ana was the former minister for State and Internal Administration from 2002 until 2007 and was also the Justice Minister in the East Timor Transitional Administration.

In 2007, she gained election into the National Parliament and was the former wife of former President Jose Ramos-Horta. They have one son together, Loro.
