Introduction

When it comes to historic films, Titanic stands as one of the greatest romance and disaster films in American cinema. In turn, it also marked a turning point for director James Cameron, who had established himself in Hollywood for his work on some of the most prolific action movies of his era. But the story of Titanic goes far beyond the film. It is still marked as one of the most significant tragedies in American history. It not only included already prominent figures of the time, but turned others, including survivors, into historic names. Alongside their fictional counterparts and additions, they all combine to provide a great list of themed dog names.

The Titanic may have been state-of-the art and decked to the teeth with high-class passengers, but few people know that the ship was surprisingly animal friendly. Outside of the dogs that were aboard, there were numerous others animals as well, including several cats (one of which was named Jenny, who acted as the ship’s mascot and mouser), chickens, other birds and even rats, although the latter were completely unintentional.

But the ship’s dogs were easily the most well-documented. Surprisingly, despite the variation of accommodations used for the people aboard, the ship’s kennel area on the F Deck were known to be quite nice for the time. The dogs were exercised daily on the poop deck and passengers who kept their dogs there had easy access to them, at least those who didn’t go against the ship’s rules by keeping their pets in their rooms, which many did, as crew members turned a blind eye.

In total, 12 dogs were known to have boarded the ship, including a King Charles Spaniel, a couple of Airedale Terriers, a Chow-Chow, a champion French Bulldog named Gamin de Pycombe, a Pomeranian named Bebe, a toy mix named Frou-Frou and a Pekingese named Sun Yet Sen.

When the ship initially began to sink, it is said that someone actually freed the dogs from their kennels in order to give them a chance to survive, but largely resulted in a pack of extremely excited dogs racing back and forth on the slanted deck. Unfortunately, 9 of the 12 dogs perished, though not without at least a few heartwarming (and some heartbreaking) stories to go along with them.

Because of their size, two Pomeranians were saved by their owners, one belonging to Elizabeth Rothschild, who refused to board a lifeboat without her dog, and the other belonging to Margaret Hayes. The final dog to make it was the Pekingese named Sun Yet Sen who was owned by Myra Harper. While many others had to leave their dogs behind, others flat out refused. In one account, a woman refused to be rescued via lifeboat unless her dog was allowed to come too. Being too large, the dog was refused and the woman stayed behind because of it. When the SS Bremen passed through the debris, it was said that one person believed they saw the body of a woman tightly clinging to a large shaggy dog in the frozen water, a true testament to their lifelong partnership.

Titanic Inspired Dog Name Considerations

When trying to come up with an appropriate Titanic themed dog name, the best course of action is first making a list of your dog’s most prominent traits, including their looks, breed type or origin, personality and quirks. Once the list is compiled, compare it to our list of important characters, places and other names and see what suits them best.

If you’re a bit of a romantic, the names Jack, Dawson, Rose, Bukater, Ida and Isador would be appropriate, as all four characters were hopeless romantics throughout the film (and the latter two in real life). If your dog is good at keeping you calm under pressure, then the names Byles, Woodward, Brailey, Krins, Bricoux and Hartley would all be appropriate, as all real-life figures were known for their endless dedication to consoling passengers, even as the ship went down. If your dog acts like royalty but still has a good heart, then the names Countess, Rothes and Noël would all be appropriate.

Given the vast number of characters and meaningful names, there are plenty of directions you can go. If you need further inspiration, consider re-watching the film or a documentary about the original ship, as both will provide fresh insight as to what might be suitable.
