A dog may be named “Christmas” after the holiday or the Yellow Labrador Retriever in Greg Kincaid’s novel A Dog Named Christmas.

When one thinks of the delight of winter and snow, a team of brilliant sled dogs come to mind. The most famous of sled dogs is Balto; while a dog of that name is the star of an animated Disney film of the same name, Balto’s fame is the result of his efforts as a lead sled dog in the “serum run to Nome” in 1925. During this run, serum for diphtheria was obtained and delivered from Anchorage to Nenana, Alaska, in an effort to stop the spread of the illness. In horrible conditions where the human guiding the sled could not see the dogs closest to the sled, Balto was able to lead a team of dogs to get the serum from Nenana. Another famous dog from the serum run to Nome is Togo, he led a team of dogs on the longest and most hazardous stretch of the route.

Eight Below, is an exciting movie about sled dogs where the dogs are left alone to fend for themselves in the Antarctic. Names of dogs from the film include: Koda, Apache, Buck and Noble. A 2002 Disney comedy titled Snow Dogs also features sled dogs: a Miami dentist who knows absolutely nothing about dogs inherits a team of spunky canines and has to figure out how befriend them so that he can work with them. Disney’s Snow Buddies features an inadvertent Alaskan adventure where a young husky named Shasta makes friends with some other dogs and along with his owner competes in a sled race across Alaska.

While not a sled dog, Barry, a Saint Bernard, excelled in winter weather conditions and was well known for rescuing more than 40 people under avalanches, saving their lives. Books and movies are available about this amazing dog, to include the television movie Barry of the Great St. Bernard.

Winter Dog Name Considerations

A winter-themed dog name may fit the bill when the newest member of your family is born on a snowy day or first appears in your life in the season of a winter wonderland and chilly weather. You may also be drawn to a winter name if your dog is white in color, as his coat will bring to mind white, fluffy snow, something many people associate with winter.
