South Muskogee
Located at the junction of the Arkansas River and Greenleaf Creek, Arrowhead Point Public Use Area in the far south of Muskogee is just six miles south of Braggs. This lovely free recreation area is perfect for a scenic picnic or walks through the woodland with your pup. If the area isn’t too busy, you can even let him off the lead for a little run or splash in the creek, but make sure he will follow your commands as there aren’t any fences. Just west of the park is a hiking trail along the E0970, known by the same name. This multi-use trail is a linear 1.9 miles, so you will need to turn around and travel back the way you came.36
Sand Hill
Just south of Braggs is the community of Sand Hill, where you can take a walk along the trail known by the road it follows, the N4390. This trail is 3.3 miles long out-and-back. From this trail, you can connect to the E0940 at the north end, which runs a further 2.1 miles west-east. At the south end of the N4390 is the Elm Grove Road Trail which is another linear 3.9 miles. These trails are designated as multi-use, so keep your eyes out for other hikers, bikers or horse riders. Your pup should remain leashed for his safety, and always clean up any mess he leaves behind.24
South East Muskogee
The Gruber ORV Recreation Area in Muskogee is just four miles north of Braggs on the same side of the river. This massive 455 acres of woodland is a designated ORV area, but there are many trails you can hike with your pet too. Keep alert for approaching vehicles and your pup should stay leashed for his safety. Gruber ORV Recreation Area is free to use, but a small donation is welcome at the box on site. Pack yourself a picnic for your outing and utilize the tables, pavilions, and grills provided for a tasty lunch or afternoon snack after your trail walk.12
North Vian
Take a drive fifteen miles east of Braggs to the northern section of Vian, where you can enjoy the beautiful Tenkiller State Park. This 1,190 green space has numerous activities to enjoy with your family, including many trails you can walk with your pup. Pets are allowed in both the recreation area as well as the campsites, so you could even make a weekend of it and stay a few days! There are picnic areas with grills, restrooms, a restaurant on site, and a playground for the kids to enjoy. The lake provides lots of activities as well, including swimming, fishing, kayaking, and snorkeling. West of Braggs over the river in Muskogee is Civitan Park, where you can come for a day out and spend time relaxing in this lovely green space covering 43 acres of hillside. Civitan Park has a 0.8-mile looped walking trail around the grounds which is perfect for a few laps with your pup. Bring your lunch and seek out the picnic areas for a quiet spell, or relax on the many grassed areas with your pet and enjoy the sunshine.
