The summit trail can be accessed from either William Lake Trail or Bull of the Woods Trail. The summit reaches a staggering 13,161 feet, and is considered an expert level hike. If you want to spend the night under the stars with your best pal, backcountry camping is also allowed in the area without a permit. The trails offer fantastic views with contrasting scenery. Be sure to bring your own supplies, including plenty of drinking water for your pup! Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head over to Tim’s Stray Dog Cantina. Here you can enjoy your food on the dog friendly patio with a side of stunning mountain views.

Taos Historic District

Just a 30 minute drive southwest of Taos Ski Valley lies the larger city of Taos. This city has many pet friendly parks and activities to offer. The Taos Historic District is home to the beloved Kit Carson Park. This 19 acre park features tall trees, cool grassy areas, and a walking track around the perimeter. The park also has playgrounds, athletic fields, and picnic areas. Leashed dogs are welcome, just don’t forget the waste bags and dog treats for your good pooch! You may even be able to catch a concert or performance at the bandstand. When your stomach is growling, head over to Gutiz. Here you can enjoy some award winning Latin and French cuisine while your pup enjoys a water bowl on the outdoor dog friendly patio.

Sipapu Street

Another great urban park in the town of Taos can be found in the Sipapu Street neighbrohood. Fred Baca Park has something in it for everyone. If you would like to enjoy some peaceful meditation or wildlife observation with your canine companion, you can head over to the attached 5 acre wetlands area. The wetlands feature a trail and observation areas. For some heart pumping exercise or playtime, you can make use of the jogging track and athletic fields. Other features include playgrounds and picnic areas. Leashed dogs are welcome as long as they get picked up after! When it’s time for a treat head over to Jethro’s Genuine Texas Barbecue. They offer pet friendly picnic tables, sandwiches, and smoked meats by-the-pound.

Red River

For a unique way to explore the mountainous landscape with your pooch, head south to the nearby town of Red River. This town is just under an hour away, but the drive is worth it! Here you can get the chance to do some off roading, and well-behaved dogs can join in on the fun for free! Red River Offroad offers snowcat and 4x4 jeep tours of the Taos Mountains. Be sure to give advance notice if you’re planning on bringing your doggo along for the ride. When you and your pup are tuckered out, you don’t need to look far for pet friendly accommodations. The Golden Eagle Lodge Red River allows up to two pets under 50 pounds for an extra fee.

Eagle Nest

In the nearby town of Eagle Nest, you can find another puppy paradise, and a great way to explore the great outdoors. The Cimarron Canyon State Park is about an hour drive southeast of Taos Ski Valley, and sits inside the Colin Neblett Wildlife Management Area, therefore offering many trails and ample opportunity for wildlife watching. This park is known for its scenic, forested canyon that is bisected by the Cimarron River. If you want to stick around for a while in the great outdoors, you and your dog can spend the night at one of the 4 separate campgrounds in the park. Dogs are welcome, as long as they stay leashed, don’t disturb the other campers, and you follow Leave No Trace principles.
