Danielson
Danielson is a borough in the town of Killingly, just north of Sterling. The best place to take pup in this area is to the Old Furnace State Park, which is adjacent to the Ross Pond State Park. Covering a total of 367 acres, it is the perfect place to go fishing, and there are marked trails for different skill levels. If your pup likes to meander, try the blue trail with its easy ascent. If your pup loves a challenge, take the more strenuous routes. There are wooded and open areas, and hikes up the cliffs. Worn out? Head to dog-friendly Heirloom Food Company’s organic café and juice bar.

South Killingly
Killingly is a small town north of Sterling, and home to the Quinebaug Lake State Park. This park covers 181 acres and is popular for its outstanding fishing opportunities and non-motorized boating on the waters of the Wauregan Reservoir. This is an excellent place to put in a line and relax the day away with your pup, waiting for the hungry catfish to start biting. If you have a boat, launch it here and take your pup for a cruise. This is another perfect place to bring a picnic lunch. No restrooms or water are on-site, so plan accordingly.

Canterbury
Head with your pup to Canterbury, a small town west of Sterling, to visit the Robert Manship Park. This is the perfect place to have Fido roam on their open, grassy sports fields, or let your fur-ever friend splash in the Quinebaug River, where canoes and kayaks frequent. There is a playground for small children, picnic tables, and restrooms. Be sure to bring mutt mitts to keep this park tidy, and be aware that dogs are required to be on leash. Since there are no dog-friendly restaurants in Canterbury, how about packing a picnic lunch or burgers to grill to share with your pup!

Voluntown
Voluntown is a small town, south of Sterling. The Pachaug State Forest is the largest in Connecticut, encompassing over 26,000 acres. It is spread over six towns, including Sterling, and can be accessed here. The forest is divided into two main areas, the Chapman and Green Falls Areas. Both are filled with dog-friendly amenities such as boating, camping, biking, fishing, and pit-toilets. Chapman offers miles of equestrian, motorcycle, and hiking trails through open and forested lands to keep any pup more than happy. Dogs can explore off-leash if under voice control. Be sure to bring a picnic and water.

Griswold
The Hopeville Pond State Park is a great recreation area in the town of Griswold, located south of Sterling. This area is 554 acres full of pawtastic fun. There is a campground for overnight stays, lakes for boating, ponds for fishing and swimming, and miles of hiking trails. Although pups are not allowed in the campground pond waters, they are most welcome everywhere else. There are also picnic tables, restrooms and water fountains. Got a sweet tooth?
