"The Princess City", as it is known by the locals, lies on the St. Joseph River and has a rich and interesting history that is worth exploring. In the 1830s, bog iron deposits were found in the area, and that's where the recorded history of the town began. People started to migrate there to mine the iron, and soon, the community of St. Joseph Iron Works (which would later be incorporated into Mishawaka) grew into a prosperous place.
Modern Mishawaka has a family-friendly, hometown vibe. In 2010, Business Week Magazine ranked Mishawaka second on its list of "Best Places to Raise Kids" in Indiana. That includes the furry children, too! Another cool fact about Mishawaka: actor Adam Driver, who you might know as Kylo Ren from the latest Star Wars movies, spent his childhood there because it's his mother's birthplace and hometown!
The Princess City is fairly dog-friendly as well and promotes healthy and active lifestyles through its 29 city parks. When it comes to veterinary care for your pooch, the city has more than six veterinary hospitals that are easily accessible. Continuing the trend of being a friendly place, Mishawaka offers around nine accommodations where your dog is allowed to stay with you. Residence Inn by Mariott South Bend Mishawaka and Country Inn & Suites Mishawaka both welcome canine guests!
After exploring Mishawaka's surrounding areas, head back into town to find plenty of dog-friendly places to explore with your canine friend. There is a pup-friendly place for every taste -- from restaurants and cafes to taverns, fast food places, and more. Want to grab a quick bite? You can choose between Rally's Hamburgers, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Nedderman's Steak Place, or Culver's. If you're in the mood for a sit-down meal, visit Doc Pierce's Restaurant or the Morgans and Little Black Dog Tavern. For some coffee and sweets, stop by Cold Stone Creamery, South Bend Chocolate Company, or Caribou Coffee. Bring a leash and water bowl to all establishments. Bone Appetit!
