Head to the Phillips Landing/ Nanticoke Wildlife Area in the West Laurel neighborhood, in the town of Laurel, 14 miles northeast of Mardela Springs. Here you can pick up the Chesapeake Bay Historic Water Trail for some great hiking fun with your pawtastic pup. You can take Fido for an on leash walk here for 2 miles along the Nanticoke River and watch the boaters which frequent this area. If you have a kayak or canoe, you can put it in here. Afterwards, enjoy lunch on the waterside tables and enjoy the scenic views. Restrooms are available but no water.

Hebron

The Crooked Oak Playground, in the town of Hebron, 6 miles northwest of Mardela Springs, is a quaint neighborhood park which offers fun for you and your pawtastic pup on its 2.5 acres. There is a lot of open green space for taking Fido for a walk on an extended leash here. You can enjoy catching a game on their basketball courts or soccer fields, and the kiddos can play on the swing sets. Shade trees are abundant here, so you can enjoy lunch together in cool comfort. When you are tired of walking, relax on the many benches found throughout.

Sharptown

In the town of Sharptown, 7.8 miles north of Mardela Springs, two parks are waiting for you and your pup to enjoy. Cope Bennett Park, located on the Nanticoke River, has a terrific walking path to hike with Fido on leash. This greenway trail meanders along water’s edge and makes its way to Cherry Beach Park, which offers more fun for all. There is a playground here and a large picnic pavilion. Or head to Gene Lowe Park which offers 3.7 acres of sports courts and fields and a playground for the kids. Open spaces for walking are fun here.

Vienna

The Vienna Waterfront Park, in the town of Vienna, 6 miles northwest of Mardela Springs, features great outdoor space for you and your pup to enjoy the day together. The open green areas offer landscaped grounds directly on the water for you and Fido to take a stroll and view all the scenic beauty of the area. A lovely pavilion offers visitors to sit, relax and listen to the live music festivals which frequent this park during the summer months. Your pup is welcome on leash throughout. Restrooms are on site. Please bring mutt mitts to keep the park clean.

North Salisbury

Just the ticket for some outdoor exploration is Leonard’s Mill Park, 12 miles west of Mardela Springs, in the North Salisbury neighborhood in Salisbury. This is a hiker’s paradise where you and Fido can carve your own path on its 313 acres. This ecosystem offers a mix of trees, animals and endangered birds. Hike for miles and take in all that nature has to offer. Many out-of-the-way places allow your pup to remain off leash. Plan to take boots and towels for your pawtastic friend, as some ground areas remain wet year-round. No restrooms are on site.
