Placitas contains a single neighborhood, simply known as Placitas, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t adventure to be had. The Sandia Man Cave is a great spot to take your dog to for a fun day exploring and hiking. To get to the cave, you need to hike about 10-15 minutes. The cave is easy to access by a spiral staircase, but make sure to bring a flashlight if you plan on going deeper into the cave since there isn’t much light. When inside the cave, your dog needs to stay on leash for his own safety. Make sure to bring plenty of water for everyone, and locals warn that the road leading to the cave is a bumpy drive so be prepared. Known for their hand-crafted dry table wines using their locally grown apricots, peaches, plums, cherries, and other fruit, Anasazi Fields Winery welcomes your dog to enjoy their outdoor patio with you.

Sandia Heights
Just 20 miles south of Placitas in this Albuquerque neighborhood is the Cibola National Forest. The national forest contains over 1.6 million acres, with elevations ranging between 2,700 feet to over 11,300 feet. Your dog will love exploring the mixture of forest and grassland in this national park, but always be on lookout for the bears and cougars that frequent the forest. Make sure to bring plenty of water for you and your dog since there won’t be any fountains around.

If you and your dog are out exploring Placitas and need a pet-friendly hotel to relax at for a few days, then look for further then Hacienda Vargas. Hacienda Vargas is in the town of Algodones, which is less than twenty minutes north of Placitas and a perfect spot for you and Fido to relax at. They have numerous amenities, including free breakfast, outdoor grills, free parking, and a library. There is a $10 pet fee when you book with them, but it is refundable after your stay. If you are staying in Algodones, make sure to visit their historical downtown and the Coronado Historic Site. To the west of Placitas is the town of Rio Rancho, which houses the Rio Vista Park and Dog Park. This 4 acre park seems to have it all- sports courts, a walking path, trails for bikes and hikers, picnic areas and grills, benches, and even water fountains. Best of all for your pup, it also has its own dog park! Dogs can frolic free unleashed inside the dog park, but must resume the leash once back in the big park. There are waste bags available.

This Rio Rancho neighborhood to the west of Placitas is home to the Mountain View Park and Dog Park. The 20 acres that make up the park are filled with adventure for your pup. Trails and a walking path beckon the sniffers, while the open grassy areas call to the runners. Picnic tables and grills offer a nice place for a meal. Once your pup is ready for socializing, head to the off leash area specifically for dogs. Here, your pup can romp free, but once back in the park, be sure to put on the leash!
