Introduction
Afrikaans is a language that belongs in the West Germanic language family, and it is tightly connected to Dutch. This is mostly because it actually evolved from the Dutch vernacular which the settlers spoke when they came to South Africa. Afrikaans can be described as “the child of Dutch”, but what it actually also is, is a creole, or a creolized language. The name is a short form of the Afrikaans-Hollands, its previous full name, which literally means African Dutch. It is widely spoken in South Africa, a fascinating country that gave us many artists and performers, as well as other important historical figures, so wanting Afrikaans to be the inspiration for the name of your pup is surely not a surprise.
Afrikaans Dog Names in Pop Culture
Some dogs are short, some are tall, some are small, and some are big. There are big dogs, and then there are super massive big doggos that make their way into the Internet fame just because of their immense size. Not saying that they do not deserve it, because they definitely do, it takes time and dedication to grow to such immense sizes. One of such lovely large pups is the adorable Ultra Grigory, whose name reminds of a wrestler’s moniker, or that of a superhero. And he is, or was, a little bit of both at times.
Ultra Grigory was a huge Boerboel who became popular after a photo of him was posted on the Internet sitting and smiling on the stairs next to his owner, Brink Botha. The Internet went into a frenzy when this photo was posted. People were leaving comments on all platforms, deliberating whether the photograph was doctored or somehow tampered with. They started memeing the photo, using it as an example of huge dogs, and made Grigory into a superstar! His owner confirmed that the photo was not altered in any way and that Grigory’s immense size is due to the angle of the photo, which makes him look bigger than he really is, but that there are videos on the World Wide Web that show his actual measurements. Even after watching the videos, one would conclude that Grigory is a huge doggo either way, but maybe not as gigantic as the photo leads us to believe.
Grigory was born in 2001 (location unknown), to a mom named Hansom Penny and a dad named Gretchen Symmo. This gorgeous dog has so many offspring, so his genes still live on, even though he, sadly, passed away. Grigory is a dad to Survivor Noekie, Mauzer Rooies, and Romanov Nikita, to name a few, who are all amazing dogs with strong pedigrees.
As previously mentioned, Grigory was a Boeroel, a breed also known as the South African Mastiff. It is a large, Molosser breed from South Africa, and if they could talk, they would surely speak Afrikaans. These big doggos were bred as farm dogs and guard dogs, and they are exceptionally strong. Their name comes from the Afrikaans word boer, which means farmer, showing their original breeding purpose, and the word boel, which is a slang word for dog – so, their name can literally be translated as farmer’s dog.
Afrikaans Dog Name Considerations
Thinking about the perfect name for your pup inspired or directly coming from the Afrikaans language is not an easy task, but at the same time, it is quite a fun and challenging journey. Picking a perfect moniker is the start of a beautiful friendship between you and your pup, and there are many ways in which you can tackle this. You can choose famous people as an inspiration, for example a musician or an actor from South Africa, or you can use a dictionary to translate your favorite word into Afrikaans.
If that is how you have decided to roll, the options are literally endless. For example, your new pup can get the name Vlek which means spot in Afrikaans and it is perfect for a spotty pupperino that melts your heart with their puppy eyes. Wit means white in Afrikaans, and it is a perfect name for a white dog, and Blom means petal in Afrikaans, and it is just an amazing match for a gentle and delicate pup. Or, maybe you can name your Boerboel simply – Boel, which is a slang word for dog in Afrikaans. Even if you choose a Dutch word and translate it, it would probably work, as Afrikaans was developed from Dutch, but with the power of Internet, now more than ever, it is so easy to translate everything even if it is hard to find an Afrikaans dictionary in your library.
