Introduction
Naruto is one of the most popular manga and anime series, as well as one of the longest running ones. It tells a story of an adolescent orphaned ninja from a Konoha village who dreams of becoming a Hokage, the leader of the village. The anime is split into two parts, the first part where Naruto is a child studying in the Ninja Academy, and Naruto Shippuden, where Naruto is older, fighting the demons of his own. Naming your dog after a Naruto character can be a great way to pay an homage to your favorite hero, as well as giving you the excuse to take the whole weekend off and re-watch at least a part of the show.
Naruto Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Naruto universe is filled with many animals, both realistic and completely fictional, however, one of them takes a special place on the list, and that is Pakkun. Pakkun is a Pug and one of Hatake Kakashi’s ninken, the Ninja Dogs who can be summoned by a shinobi. The Ninken possess heightened senses and abilities, as well as the ability to speak, use combat techniques, travel through the ground instead of on it, and even mutate!
Pakkun, even though he is very small, is incredibly intelligent. He is not a battle dog, but he is very proficient in strategizing, his sense of smell is unmatched, so much so that he can even discover even the masked scent of his target! Pakkun is also quite strong, as well as an excellent leader of his pack, which makes him the perfect companion to Kakashi who readily summons him whenever his talents are needed.
Pakkun has quite the sense of humor as well. During a rescue mission for Sasuke, when Shikamaru was reluctant to help, Pakkun promised him that he could touch his soft, pink paws upon the completion of the mission. He is quite cynical and sarcastic at times, and actually the most prominent member of his crew.
Physically, Pakkun is quite small, most probably a brown Pug with dark brown ears. His paws are squishy and pink, and he is wearing a forehead protector with the Konoha leaf on it, as well as a blue vest. On the back of his west is a seal, known as the henohenomoheji symbol in the shape of a face, usually drawn by Japanese children and meaning scarecrow, or phonetically transcribed as Kakashi, Pakkun’s summoner. Most importantly, he uses the same shampoo as Sakura does!
He is one ninken that gets summoned most frequently, probably due to his wisdom and his ability to look at the problem rationally. When Pakkun is on a mission, the rest of the team can be sure that they will get the most accurate information from him, as he is always very thorough with his work.
As far as Pakkun’s name etymology goes, it is unclear how it ties back to Naruto and the whole Hidden Village universe. It is considered that Pakkun is just an abbreviation of Patrick-kun, used as a nickname for someone named Patrick. However, some say that his name actually means “pack”.
Naruto Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Picking a name for your new puppy from Naruto or Naruto Shippuden is not a walk in the park, mostly due to the fact that there are so many characters to choose from! Whether you decide on taking the name of one of the main characters or decide to go deep into the anime (or manga) and name your pup after an extra in Ichiraku Ramen restaurant, you will probably spend some time figuring out which one to commit to. However, this could be quite an adventure!
Does your dog have ginger-colored coat and resemble a fox? Why not name him Kyuubi after the nine-tailed demon fox sealed in Naruto’s body?? Bonus points if they actually have nine tails! Or, if you are more of a fan of an eight-tailed Bijuu, a name such as Gyuuki will be perfect! A small dog might benefit a lot with a name such as Killer Bee, mostly due to the fact that Killer Bee in Naruto is a huge man with an affinity towards rap music. Bisuke is another solid choice, especially if your dog resembles the dog from the anime, which is a smaller-size dog with tan coat and brown ears.
