Introduction
Whether you are a fan of the fanciful world of Alice in Wonderland or you are a literature aficionado, an Alice in Wonderland name may be the perfect fit for your canine companion. When lovers of the tale think about the story, they recall the unusual characters, strange settings and brilliant story telling. Since your dog is a major part of your life and maybe even part of your own personal “wonderland,” choosing a name from this beloved book could be the perfect, whimsical choice. Whether you name your pet after one of the well-known characters, someone a little lesser-known or even something simply inspired by the tale, choosing an Alice in Wonderland dog name is a good way to set your pet apart from the crowd.
Alice in Wonderland Dog Names in Pop Culture
Alice in Wonderland is a pop culture staple. From the original novel by Lewis Carroll titled Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to the recent film adaptations, television episodes and more, this work of classic literature has become a major part of American culture. People of all ages love the tale, and its many characters are some of the most recognizable in American literature.
While the most famous animal character in the world of Wonderland is arguably either the Cheshire Cat or the White Rabbit, there are several other animals in this fictional universe, including a dog. Known only as “Puppy” in the original book, he is discovered by Alice after shrinking to a tiny size and escaping to the White Rabbit’s garden. Though he appears gigantic to Alice, he is actually normally sized. While in the garden, she plays with him briefly but fears being trampled. Though only present as a minor, nameless puppy in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a bloodhound named Bayard has a much more prominent role in 2010’s Alice in Wonderland film. He is enslaved by the Red Queen, and he fears that his wife and pups, whom the Queen has taken captive, will be harmed if he does not do her bidding. He is told by the Knave that he and his family will earn their freedom if he finds Alice. The Knave of Hearts’ horse soon reveals to him, however, that the promise of freedom is a lie and will not be following through on.
Bayard locates Alice at the Mad Hatter’s tea party but leads the knights away on the Hatter’s orders. The Hatter hides Alice inside a teapot, and she is not discovered. Later, Bayard finds Alice again and, this time, takes her to the Red Queen’s castle by her own request. At the castle, Alice attempts to rescue the Mad Hatter from the Red Queen but fails. Bayard then leads her to the White Queen’s castle. He also appears in the movie’s sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass. A brown bloodhound with a black collar, Bayard is a loving, thoughtful dog. He is willing to do anything to keep his wife and pups safe, even if it makes sacrificing his own well-being. Though he does not appear in any other Alice in Wonderland adaptations, a popular fan theory suggests that he may be the puppy depicted in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Alice in Wonderland Dog Name Considerations
Choosing the perfect name for a puppy or even an older rescue dog is tough job. You need to find one you like, but it also needs to be one that fits your pooch’s appearance and personality. If Alice in Wonderland is one of your favorite tales, choosing a name from the story is a great way to show your fandom while giving your dog a unique, fitting name.
When looking at names, think about your dog’s characteristics. An all-white dog may make a suitable Rabbit for example, and a ginger dog could make a good Red. Also consider your dog’s personality and remember that the name you choose will still with your canine companion for the rest of his or her life. Alice in Wonderland is a classic tale, so there is little chance of it going out of style, but it is still important to consider whether you will still like the name several years from now. Also, keep in mind that it is always best to avoid names that could be considered inappropriate or offensive. For an Alice in Wonderland name, keep it whimsical, and you cannot go wrong.
