Introduction
Blue’s Clues is a children’s television show that premiered in 1996 on the Nickelodeon network. The show blended animation with live action as Blue, an animated blue dog, left blue paw-print shaped clues in order to communicate her plans for the day to the host of the show. The original host in the United States was Steve, played by actor Steve Burns, but when he left for college in 2002 he was replaced by his younger brother Joe, played by Donovan Patton. The intent of the show was to both empower and educate children in the two to six-year-old range, and it resonated strongly with those age groups. It earned a TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming in 1998 and 1999 as well as a Peabody Award in 2002.
Blue's Clues Dog Names in Pop Culture
The titular character on the show Blue’s Clues, Blue the puppy, has a close relationship with the people who care for her, first Steve and then his brother Joe. Both of her caretakers are able to understand her canine vocalizations, and they enjoy making her a part of their lives and playing games with her.
Famed hockey commentator Don Cherry also had a close relationship to his pooch, also named Blue, who was gifted to him by the Boston Bruins at some point between 1974 and 1979, when he was the head coach for the team.
Don was known to be a feisty coach who encouraged a tenacious and aggressive style of play, and Blue was a Bull Terrier, a feisty and tenacious breed of dog with a strong sense of loyalty. The dog became well-known throughout the hockey community, especially in Canada, Don Cherry’s home country. The first Blue passed over the rainbow bridge in 1989, but Don has had several white Bull Terrier breed dogs since, all of which he dubbed Blue. From 1992 to 1997 Don produced a series of annual hockey highlight videos called Rock’em Sock’em Hockey with his son Tim. The videos showed great plays and amazing saves as well as bloopers, typically set to techno music, and often featured Blue. Along with commentating about hockey, Don was also the part owner and coach for the Ontario Hockey League’s Mississauga IceDogs, later to become the Niagara IceDogs, and their Bull Terrier mascot was at least partly modeled on Don’s dog Blue.
Don is an opinionated and outspoken man, and one of the things that he has been most outspoken about the welfare of animals, and he has an especially strong bond with dogs. He founded two of his several businesses specifically with the intent to help dogs thrive. The first was Cherry Blue Pet Insurance, a company that helped pet-parents in both Canada and the United States to be able to afford lifesaving medical treatments for their dogs and cats. The second company that Don Cherry founded is a non-profit company known as Don Cherry’s Pet Rescue Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting the welfare of shelter dogs and ensuring that shelters are well-funded so that more dogs can be adopted out, utilizing a percentage of the profits from his Simply Pets line of pet snacks. While the pet insurance company has since folded, the Pet Rescue Foundation is still active.
Blue's Clues Dog Name Considerations
Many pet-parents like to choose names that are based on books, movies, or television shows that they enjoy or that they enjoyed as a child, such as the television show Blue's Clues. There are several things that can be taken into consideration when choosing a name from a list that is based on a popular children’s television show. There are several color-based names on this list and while you are unlikely to find yourself attempting to find a name for a green-coated canine, there are many breeds of dogs with red or blue coats, and names like Mr. Salt or Stork may work well for white-coated dogs. You can also choose a name from this list that is based more on your dog's behaviors or habits, selecting a name like Felix for a forgetful pooch, Shovel or Pail for a dog that loves to dig, or even Julia for the dog that just can't seem to leave your slippers alone. This list is also full of opportunities for those naming groups of dogs. The spice family consists of Mr. Salt, Mrs. Pepper, and their two children Paprika and Cinnamon, and Oogla-Boogla and Boo fit well together for a pair of dogs, as do Freddy and Fifi, two of the characters from the Felt Board who are often seen together.
