Introduction

What would happen if an average person were allowed to wield the powers of the Almighty for a day? What would happen if that person also had to try and answer every wish, plea, and prayer that came their way? How much more interesting would this little thought experiment of ours be if that person was Jim Carrey? Bruce Almighty is a comedy from the early 2000's that endeavors to all of the above questions when the Judeo Christian God (in the form of Morgan Freeman) offers Bruce Nolan (played impeccably by Jim Carrey) the opportunity to take his place for a week.

Bruce Almighty Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture

Well, it's not every day that we get a film that mixes philosophy, theology, and ethics with slapstick humor. It's even rarer that a movie with such an ambitious premise actually manages to pull it off, garnering a fair amount of critical and commercial success in the process. Back when the film was first announced, a wide assortment of groups expressed concern that the film would depict God in a disrespectful. potentially insulting way. Countries like Egypt and Malaysia even went as far as to ban the movie from playing in their theaters. When the film came out, however, many people had their fears assuaged when they witnessed Morgan Freeman's respectful and humane portrayal of God for themselves. Indeed, the entire film manages to discuss theology in a respectful way while also humanizing the very concept of a Supreme Deity. If you're a fan of art pieces that discuss theology in a fairly open-ended manner, then you may very well love Bruce Almighty. Should you find yourself such a massive fan of this Jim Carrey led comedy that you'd like to pay tribute to it, consider naming your dog after a character from the film, or even after a figure from the Bible, to pay homage.
