Katniss Everdeen is a heroic character in the four popular movies titled Hunger Games. The story is derived from the trilogy of books of the same name written by Suzane Collins. Katniss lives in a dystopian world where young people, a male and a female from each District, are pitted against each other. The winner is the sole survivor.  When Katniss finds out that her younger sister Primrose has been selected to participate in the Games she volunteers to replace her. She is pitted against Peeta, the baker's son who has shown her kindness.

When Katniss was a child, her father took her into the woods and taught her survival and battle skills that would help her in the Games, like how to hunt with a bow and arrow. He showed her an edible plant that grows in the forest and revealed that she was named after this plant, which would sustain her when she needed it.

Singing was another trait she learned from her father. While she was isolated in the woods during the Games, she sang to keep her spirits up and to remember him. He had by that time died in a mining accident, leaving her healer mother paralyzed with depression.

While in the woods, Katniss meets a boy named Gale, whom she teaches how to use the bow. In return, he teaches her how to snare animals for food. He is a political radical who dreams of an uprising against the Capitol, the oppressive governing body. While Katniss isn't interested in his politics, she agrees to protect his family and he agrees to protect hers.

Katniss was not looking forward to fighting Peeta, who is someone who had been kind when she and her family were starving. But she had promised her sister Primrose that she would try her hardest to win, even if it meant killing Peeta. Fighting him, the tracker jackers who were trying to hunt them both down, and Career Tributes that are also after her, Katniss responds with courage, cunning, and skill. In the end, both she and Peeta survive and are ordered to fight each other to the death. They refuse under a threat of double suicide and the Capitol names them both victorious. But her challenges are not finished.

As the main protagonist of the books and films, Katniss defies the odds against her while maintaining a moral compass that prevents her from doing anything she would perceive as wrong. If you have a female cat that's courageous, inventive, and loyal, Katniss might be the name for her.
