Introduction
The movie Chicken Run, released in the year 2000, was the first full-length film produced by Aardman Animations, a British animation studio, and was a collaboration with the American based Dreamworks studios. It outlines the adventures of a coop of chickens intent on escaping from their prison-like environment, headed by a no-nonsense Rhode Island Red by the name of Ginger. When a circus chicken by the name of Rocky lands in the coop, she tries to get him to teach the chickens to fly out of the coop in order to escape to paradise. Chicken Run was the top-grossing stop motion animated movie in history and earned several awards, including a Satellite Award and a Golden Tomato.
Chicken Run Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
One of the main characters in the movie Chicken Run is a Rhode Island Red hen named Ginger who has become the self-appointed leader of the chickens in the Tweedy chicken coop. She tends to be cautiously optimistic, and while she can be a bit abrupt, she cares a great deal for the other chickens, going so far as to attempt to hatch an escape plan that frees all of the chickens, not just herself. Ginger is also the name of a Golden Retriever in the Philipines, one who was unsocialized as a puppy and is generally at odds with any dog in her environment, but she tolerated the presence of the other Golden Retriever in the home, T-Bone. When her pet parents, Eric and Thea, began searching for a new dog to add to their family, they took Ginger with them to the shelter to meet the new dog. Unfortunately, Ginger rejected most of the dogs there, growling and snapping at them when they became too friendly. The pair nearly gave up, when a short, fat Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix made a beeline through the crowd of dogs, straight to the couple. Ginger was unexpectedly friendly with the little dog, even stopping to check on her when they took a trial walk together. The blind spaniel was estimated to be around ten to twelve years old and had come to the shelter as a stray, found wandering the streets of a town named Alabang during a typhoon in 2012.
Eric and Thea adopted the dog and named him Kimchi, and the two dogs immediately became fast friends, with the couple even tethering Kimchi to Ginger on occasion, to keep her from wandering off. Shortly after they began the practice of clipping the two together, Ginger, much like the character Ginger in Chicken Run, took charge. She began leading Kimchi around and helping to keep her safe, naturally playing the part of a seeing-eye dog to her blind pal. While the two are not kept tethered to each other in the home, where Kimchi is able to navigate the familiar surroundings, but whenever the dogs leave the house, they are paired together. The close friendship between the dogs has not only enriched their own lives, it has also helped to enrich the lives of many others as their bond has allowed them to blossom enough that the pair is often invited to work as therapy dogs, providing comfort to stressed-out students and corporate employees, as well as patients at hospitals, special needs centers, and nursing homes.
Chicken Run Inspired Dog Name Considerations
While many individuals will default to choosing a name based on one of the main characters, such as Ginger or Rocky, others may choose characters with smaller roles, such as Nick, Fetcher, or Edwina, and still others may prefer to honor someone crucial to the creation of the movie, such as Karey Kirkpatrick, the scriptwriter, or Pathe, one of the companies that helped to fund the movie. Pet parents can even choose a name based on an object that is important to the plot of the film, such as Hatchet, referencing Mrs. Tweedy's ever-present hatchet, or Gnome, referencing the garden gnomes that the rats use to sneak into the farm and steal things.
