Introduction
The Chinook is a very intelligent, athletic, and talented sled dog. Many people who live in northern snow-filled states own Chinooks, as they are quite popular. However, although well-known in the north, they are a very rare breed. At one point, they almost became extinct! The Chinook is the official dog of the state of New Hampshire.
This breed was bred to be strong and mighty with a lot of stamina. This is because they were, and still are, used to haul things and run sleds. Although a powerful working dog, the Chinook is a loving and loyal family dog that is great around children. The Chinook wants to please their owner and is also used for other tasks, such as search and rescue, agility, and even herding.
Chinook Dog Names in Pop Culture
In the December 27, 2016 edition of the Laconia Daily Sun, there is an article titled, The Most Famous Dog in the World. The article is about the sled dogs and the 100 year anniversary of their founders and breeders, Arthur and Kate Walden. It stated there would be a celebration in Freedom, New Hampshire in January of that year.
The director of the local library's history room, Bob Cottrell, discussed the event. The event was being put together by the local Chinook Owner's Association. Mr. Cottrell is a popular speaker about the breed, and gives lectures around the state of New Hampshire, where the breed was founded. He also owns a Chinook named Tug who is his dog and breed of choice, for sure!
The New Hampshire Union Leader, a news source in the state of Chinooks, features an article called, Gail Fisher's Dog Tracks: New activity will bring her Chinook, Larry, back to his roots. This article highlights the need and respect of the Chinook breed in the world of dog sledding. But for Larry, his job is to pull the author in a sulky, which is a (typically) horse-drawn cart that has two wheels. She is attempting to train her dog to successfully pull her along a given route, and in the article, she says she will keep everyone posted on the progress!
A popular book for Chinook owners, titled A History of Dog Sledding in New England by Bruce Heald, PhD., gives those interested in the breed and the history of the breed, a written picture of what life was like in the early days of dog sledding in the northeast. It is about the founder of the breed, Arthur Walden, and what it was like in the early days when the famous dog was bred by Shepherd, Husky, and St. Bernard ancestry. If you are interested in the beginning of the Chinook and what the Chinook stands for today, this book is a great read.
An article in the Union Leader (2014), a New Hampshire Sunday News Publication, showcases the Chinook. Little Bear, or Birr. Well-known in the community, this gorgeous Chinook will be competing in the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. The article is about Birr and his attempt at a great title, which is best in breed. He is from Lakeside Run in the state of New Hampshire and represents the official state dog.
Chinook Name Considerations
You may choose to name your dog from a state of New Hampshire city, or even a climate type. Many people who own Chinooks name them after the founder, Arthur Walden and other popular New Hampshire terms and sledding words such as Musher, Summit or Bear. Other pet parents will tag their Chinook with Hampshire since they are the official state dog.
Because the Chinook is an excellent sled dog, you can name your dog after the snow he loves, using monikers such as Snowy, Drifty, or Toboggan. Consider naming your companion after a personality trait or appearance - Mocha, Almond, Brownie, or Pack (as in being loyal to the pack) are perfect titles.
Your Chinook is probably already very special to you and has formed a bond with your family. Your family can help you select a name for your dog. You may wish to name your dog a human name to fit the true family member role, such as Max, Charlie, Sadie, or DeeDee. It depends on what you see in your dog and your Chinook's true personality and characteristics!
