Introduction
Cowboys are the original superheroes. However, instead of superpowers, they had integrity, spunk and true grit. They were known to get down and roll in the mud to get the bad guys. Or maybe they were the bad guys. Either way, does rolling around in the mud sound like something a dog would do? It's a good thing there is a lot to draw from when naming your dog something straight out of the cowpoke genre. Saddle up and get your spurs on folks because it is almost high noon and you know that means, it is time to giddyup! Yee-haw!
Cowpoke Dog Names In Pop Culture
John Wayne is one of the most famous cowboys in history. He is still well known as “The Duke”. Duke is a great dog name for any breed of dog due to its singular syllable and a dog’s attention span. A recent and popular movie The Secret Life of Pets brought a lovable mutt named Duke into our homes and our hearts. He is an abrasive ball of brown fluff who shakes up Max's life and he is a clumsy oaf as well. While his role in the movie is necessary to drive the plot, it is his backstory that makes him less of an annoyance, and more sympathetic.
Duke's owner Fred could not find him after Duke went chasing a butterfly. When he could not find his way home, animal control got called and he went to the pound. He never saw Fred again. While this is a sad story, it gets sadder. After a near miss with animal control, present day, Duke finally finds Fred's house. The cat that lives there told him that Fred passed away. This sparks more animosity between him and Max, but when Duke again gets captured Max hatches a plan to save him. At the end of the day, they return home together.
In 2014, another famous Duke made political history by running and winning the office of Mayor in Cormorant, Minnesota. He won by a landslide and the Great Pyrenees has won every year since. He is expected to run as the incumbent candidate again in 2018. This may be a ceremonial position, but he takes it very seriously. He is already working in front of traffic laws. In a very humble move, Duke only asked for five hours of grooming and a year's supply of dog food as a salary. Washington, take note.
Ranger the Danger Dog, a Jack Russell Terrier is one of The Dogs of Instagram. This guy has all kinds of thoughts and activities. He does not like meetings on Friday, he likes rainy day snuggles, and he can often be found stalking tennis balls. Ladies beware because he has swagger and a new collar. He has mastered the guilt trip and is vehemently opposed to Tongue out Thursday. He slipped one week, but it was an oversight. Never let it be said that Ranger the Danger Dog is afraid to go a couple of hours without toys on principle.
Cowpoke Dog Name Considerations
As with any theme for naming your dog, you should choose something you really care about. If you do not like westerns, perhaps you should go another route. However, if you love westerns then there are so many names to pull from this theme. Shows like Gunsmoke and Bonanza are rich with names and ideas, while a movie like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly has an all-star cast of names to choose from. Clint Eastwood has remained a star even after the age of spaghetti westerns and Clint is an ideal dog name.
For naming your dog, you want to keep it simple. Too many syllables and you lose your dog's attention. If you choose a name like Doc Holliday, consider going with "Doc". You can choose a unique name that is quick and to the point. Colt is a popular name because it is both a gun and a young horse. Both are super fast, but the horse is definitely a better ride. Make sure it is something a dog will respond to and learn their name. A unique name is great, but not if your dog won't listen to it. One or two syllables is all that is necessary.
