Introduction
Monsters, Inc. Dog Names in Pop Culture
Our pop culture spotlight starts with no other than Sullivan, or rather Sulley for short, a cross between a Chinese Crested dog, Border Collie, and a Poodle. His owner is Ashleigh Butler, who was part of famous Britain’s Got Talent winning duo Ashleigh and Pudsey, her previous dog. Pudsey passed away in July 2017 at 11 years of age. Sullivan, also referred to as The Closet Monster of Ashpen, was bought by Ashleigh when he was only one month old. Ashleigh trained Sulley to be there if Pudsey ever needed a break or wasn’t feeling up to the spotlight anymore. He was named Sulley after the Monsters, Inc. movie since he also has a blue merle coloring.
Next in the spotlight is a one-eyed puppy named Mike Wazowski who is owned by Cody Garrett, a police offer in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Cody Garrett stated that he named his rescue puppy Mike Wazowski because he was one-eyed, exactly like Mike in Monsters, Inc.
The next dog is Boo, who’s owner Rosie, from Swindon in Southeast England, suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome and post-traumatic stress disorder. Boo, a lurcher dog, has become a therapeutic release for Rosie. Though Boo hasn’t received any assistance dog training, she is still able to detect changes in Rosie, such as the moments before a PTSD attack. They have been great for one another. Another dog also named Boo, who is a Leonberger, is a therapy dog that spends his days either in elementary classrooms or at a hospice comforting others. At the classrooms, he gets books read to him by the elementary school children. At the hospice, he comforts people in need. Boo does a double duty to get everyone happy.
Augustus, Auggie for short, is a Corgi. Auggie became Internet popular when his owner, Eric Smith, uploaded a video of him trying to play with his own reflection. In the video, Auggie can be seen scratching his bone against his reflection in the mirror. When his reflection doesn’t reply to him, he can be seen staring and whining at his reflection. In the end, he just plops down in frustration as he takes his toy with him.
Another dog named Augustus hadn’t had the best life before he was rescued. As a severely neglected stray, Augustus wandered around the streets of Lauderdale County, Alabama. He had a severe case of mange when he was rescued by an Alabama Animal Shelter They treated him until his white and black fur grew back. He has now been adopted by a woman in Montgomery named Jordan who has cared for Augustus along with her previous dog Layla.
Monsters, Inc. Dog Name Considerations
When Monsters Inc. comes to mind, we generally think of a soft cuddly Sulley and a tiny Mike Wazowski. Now, the size doesn’t necessarily determine how a dog behaves or acts, but in our eyes, dogs with a Monsters, Inc. themed name deserve to be those who have somewhat of a sensitive soul. There are various breeds out there that have been claimed to have sensitive souls, but we made a list of seven specific breeds that came to our attention.
American Pit Bull Terriers, though they might look intimidating and have bad reps, are actually quite sensitive dogs. The breed was originally developed to be gentle and soft towards their owners but trained to fight and hunt other animals. Australian Shepherds, as livestock dogs, are determined in their work but very sensitive and gentle towards their owners.
Similar to the Australian Shepherds, Border Collies are also bred to work in tough conditions for long periods of time. They are emotionally sensitive to their owners, which makes them easy to train. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were bred to be lapdogs; they are affectionate and gentle companions, as well as being sensitive to human emotions which makes them great therapy dogs. Other breeds include the Dogue de Bordeaux, Rottweiler, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Regardless of the breeds mentioned above, the name you choose will correlate with the personality of your dog. If they are just as soft and cuddly or straight to the point as the characters in Monsters, Inc., these names will suit them just fine.
