Introduction
Criminal Minds is a popular procedural crime drama show written by Jeff Davis that was first televised in 2006 and has remained on the air for over a decade. The show follows the work and lives of the agents at the Behavioral Analysis Unit, or BAU for short, as they profile killers and other criminals so that they can bring them to justice. Many of the characters have moved on through the seasons, and new ones have taken their place with only three characters, Penelope Garcia, Dr. Spencer Reid, and Jennifer “JJ” Jareau, appearing in every season. There are many options available for those who wish to give their canine companion a name inspired by this hard-hitting and sometimes unpredictable drama.
Criminal Minds Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Jennifer “JJ” Jareau is the name of a capable and well-liked agent on the show and one of only four characters who has appeared in all of the seasons that have aired. She started out as a liaison between the BAU and the police and media, then became an official profiler, and even stood as the acting chief of BAU for a little while when Emily Prentiss was on suspension. This strong, smart character with a heart of gold shares her name with another JJ with a heart of gold, JJ Krawczyk, a former shelter dog turned service animal. When he was first rescued from the animal shelter he was in, JJ was originally trained in scent detection by Deb Cunningham for diabetic patients, but his focus changed a bit with the introduction of a little girl named KK. KK Krawczyk is a little girl with a big disease. Its called mastocytosis, and it’s a rare disease that can cause the sudden accumulation of mast cells in the organs; once activated the mast cells often induce an immediate allergic reaction that can range in severity from a mild annoyance to anaphylactic shock. The accumulation of these cells can be triggered by anything, including changes in temperature, stress, or mild infections, and she requires a monitor at night to ensure that her parents are alerted if something goes wrong. JJ was trained to be able to detect when KK is about to have a reaction, and she often alerts KK’s mother to the oncoming attack several minutes before the electronic monitors go off and gives her the freedom to safely attend school. JJ is the the first dog to be trained to detect changes that indicate that a mastocytosis attack is going to occur and his detection abilities are so respected that he was allowed into the procedure room during operations on the little girl in order to help detect changes early if the anesthesia or other medication triggered an attack. Not only has JJ helped KK to live a more normal life, but he has also used his ability to detect changes in the body to alert another individual outside of the family that she was having blood sugar problems, allowing her to get treatment earlier than would have otherwise been possible. JJ makes the world a safer place for KK to live in every day and in 2014 her amazing abilities and dedication to her job earned her an American Humane Society Hero Dog Award in the service dog category.
Criminal Minds Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Choosing a name for your new pet is both a responsibility and a privilege. A name that is difficult for your specific dog to hear or one that is challenging to pronounce clearly and consistently may cause confusion for your animal, possibly slowing bonding and training efforts, while one that they seem to respond to naturally may speed up the process. Although many people will be perfectly happy just to pick the name of their favorite character, there are actually several ways that you can narrow down a list of names based on a television show. You could use the name of one of the few animals mentioned on the show by choosing either Roxy or Clooney, or you could pick a name based more off of the animal’s skills and personality. Dogs with quick minds but long memories may find that sharing a moniker with Dr. Spencer Reid is the perfect choice, but a speed demon of a dog may find that a name like Jet would be more appropriate. Dogs that prefer to stay indoors and don’t like a lot of interaction may find that the name Maeve suits them and a dog who always is able to find the good in things in life may prefer a name like Joy or Penelope.
