Introduction
Diablo Dog Names in Pop Culture
In Diablo 3, players had the pleasure of purchasing a bundle of extras that came with the Collector's/Deluxe editions of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. And it was in this bundle that Bones made his debut, making gamers all over the world super happy to play the game alongside a metalhead's dream rendition of man's best friend.
But if you think his looks were all Bones had going for him, you're mistaken. He picks up any gold that he runs over, which is quite handy when you're hacking and slicing and shooting your way through waves of enemies in a dungeon. Unlike other pets, however, it doesn't engage monsters. That is one downside. But to make up for it, his description read "Please don't feed the skeleton." Now, because he is essentially a Spectral Hound, another name he goes by, Bones is summoned by the Canem Mortem Liber, a special magical object used just to summon the dog.
But there's a funny thing about the Canem Mortem Liber: the game developers at Blizzard misnamed it. It translates to "the dog the death the book." This is because "canem" is "the dog" as an object, and "mortem" is "the death" as a generic noun. Also, "liber" can have many meanings, but "book" is the most likely one in this case. What it should have been named, however, is "Liber Canis Mortui" which translates to "Book of the Dead Dog." It would have been ideal in reference to Bones the Spectral Hound. Clearly, the developers were aiming for this translation, and simply failed to translate it correctly.
But whatever the case, the Canem Mortem Liber is an item that is only used to summon Bones, and is even titled something that, had it been accurately translated, would have signaled the item (book) as a powerful, magical object. Normally, you hear about the Book of the Dead, but a dead dog version would put it up there with the rest of the fictional magical books that we've all heard of in movies, games, stories and artwork. Still, Bones was amazing, and anyone who got him really took pride in adventuring with the little guy.
Diablo Dog Name Considerations
And speaking of, there is a lot of lore in this game. So much more. There are entire blogs, books, and depictions of this lore. Which means there's a lot to draw from. If you're looking for an amazing name, you've pretty much chosen the holy grail of booming names. Just keep in mind, many of these names are of demons, or characters that wound up dead or something or another. If that doesn't bother you, try to think of how the names relate to your dog. Is your dog massive? Would the dog be good or evil? Is he always trying to get rewarded? Would the dog be a scholar or a sorcerer? These are the questions that will help steer you in the right direction when it's time to look through those Diablo names.
