Bear is an employee of Interquest Detection Canines of Chicagoland which serves over fifty school districts throughout Northern Illinois. Many schools will hire dogs like Bear to help with random searches to find drugs within school walls. However, one school in Chicago has made Bear a regular visitor.

Indian Prairie school has added Bear's services to their long list of ever-evolving ways to help their students feel safe when at school. The school has a troubled past and safety has been one of their main focuses. Bear has become a regular visitor at the school, sniffing the halls quite frequently in search of anything that shouldn't be there. His consecutive visits prove to students that the school is serious about safety and also sends a message that drugs and guns will not be tolerated.

Bear's services do not come cheap and it has been reported to cost between $300 and $320 for Bear to visit the school. However, Bear is different than other detection dogs as he is trained to passively alert his handler to anything he may smell. This means that if Bear picks up a scent, he will just sit down near the location of the item. His handlers then record the location and can discreetly pass it along to school officials. This subtle method of communication is perfect for schools as the students do not know when Bear is just sitting or telling his handler that there is something to be found in a certain location. This passive training helps keep students from being stressed or scared. It also helps that Bear is a Golden Retriever, a breed often associated with being friendly and happy.

The school plans on keeping Bear on retainer, having the dog show up at random times in order to prevent students from knowing when he will visit. Hopefully, with Bear's help, the school will become a safer place and the students will feel more at ease when walking down the halls.
