Introduction
Dog Names Ending with 'x' in Pop Culture
One such movie that captured the hearts of audiences everywhere is the 2011 Australian family comedy, "Red Dog," and its 2016 prequel, "Red Dog: True Blue." The story is based on a true tale about an Australian Kelpie/Cattle Dog that wandered the Pilbara region of the country. Owned by two people in his lifetime and spending the rest of his life as a nomad thereafter, he became a celebrity in the region and was well-liked by the inhabitants of the area. Red Dog, was named after his breed and the red dirt local to Pilbara. He died in 1979 and a statue of him was erected by the many friends he made throughout his journey in life.
In 2011, a dog named Koko immortalized Red Dog in an eponymous film. The mascot reached into the hearts of the audience, and "Red Dog" became a popular film. Five years later, the directors wanted to tell a prequel story, but unfortunately, Koko had passed away a year after the making of the film. They enlisted Phoenix, who was a newcomer in showbiz, but lacked the charisma and adventurous spirit of the Pilbara wanderer.
Phoenix however, experienced stardom after being cast in the famous role. His striking red coat, the usual look for red cloud Kelpies, may have inspired his unique name. From not having any onscreen experience to taking up the mantle of the country's beloved icon, Phoenix had to work hard to live up to expectations - and that he did! For the premiere of his film, he toured all around Australia, and also attended film festivals in the United States and Germany. He truly lives up to the charming nomad he plays on the big screen. A unique breed, a wonderful story, a unique job and an enchanting name - Phoenix has it all!
