Jane and Dave Griffith weren't counting on bad weather for their sailing holiday off the coast of Queensland. It got so bad that in a rough patch out at sea, the sudden jerk caused their precious pet Sophie to go overboard. Because of the weather and the amount of force that shook the boat, they assumed that it was a lost cause and mourned the loss of their Sophie.

Little did they know that clever little Sophie has survival instincts like no other. The Griffiths only found out the faith of the cattle dog four months after the unfortunate incident, after receiving reports of a dog found on an uninhabited island. To be able to get to St. Bee's Island from the crash site, Sophie had to swim five nautical miles. It's not just about the intense distance, but also the fact that she did this while a storm was brewing over the choppy waters. As a bonus, these waters are actually shark-infested and there was a big chance she might have been dragged down into the water! With so many factors for her survival on the line, she must be very brave and very clever indeed to get to land.

Sophie's cleverness doesn't end there. On her time by herself, she hunted in order to be able to feed herself. She was found to be hunting the goats native to the small island. This provided her the proper food and nutrients to keep up with her environment. From a domesticated life, her cattle dog instincts kicked in and saved her from starving to death.

She was found and captured by rangers, who were contacted by the Griffiths. Their amazing reunion was dashed by the realization that Sophie went through a harrowing time that made her wild, vicious, and untrusting, but through a quick spell, she has readjusted into her old home. What an adventure for a hardy dog - it's truly a journey only the most clever creatures could survive!
