Introduction
Dog Names Meaning Power In Pop Culture
The gist of Balto's tale is as follows; the town of Nome had experienced a diphtheria outbreak in 1924 which greatly affected their small populace of about 2,000 people. Realizing the townsfolk would be wiped out by the disease, the last doctor of Nome, named Curtis Welch, sent distress calls to nearby Alaskan towns as well as the U.S. Public Health Service in Washington D. C. The scenario seemed bleak but Dr. Welch's distress calls were answered and a plan was soon formulated to save the people of Nome from impending doom.
The superintendent of health, Mark Summers, proposed that a dog sledding relay be used to get the diphtheria antiserum to the people of Nome in time and the Board of Health reached out to 20 of the best dog sledding teams of the area to help get the job done. "Wild" Bill Shannon lead the charge, as he and his team picked up the cargo from a train station in Nenana and transported it all the way to Tolovana. Four of Bill's dogs had perished due to the harsh environment their team had to brave, and Bill was afflicted with frostbite as well, but the cargo nevertheless reached its destination and changed hands many times before eventually reaching Balto's sled team, led by Gunnar Kaasen.
Balto and Kaasen's team experienced a great deal of hardship and tragedy as well, with Kaasen famously stating that he and Balto's team had to traverse through a whiteout so extreme, he was unable to see his hands or even the rest of his dog sledding team. Nevertheless Balto stayed the course and persevered, leading to the eventual salvation of the people of Nome. Eternally grateful, the people of Nome initially only thanked Kaasen until he suggested that they thank Balto as well. A statue was erected in Balto's honor, which still stands to this day.
Dog Name Meaning Power Considerations
One's name may not entirely define who they are or who they can become, but it is no less one of those aspects of a person's identity that sticks with them throughout this life and possibly even the next; in a manner of speaking, people and places may perish but names and the ideas attached to them can potentially live on forever, becoming larger than life in a way. If you give your dog a name that means power, you've given them a name that expresses the qualities that you hope to see your pet exhibit with time and training. The classical dog name Rex, for instance, might just seem like a thoughtless name on the surface, but it actually means "king" in Latin and subconsciously brings thoughts of the prehistoric Tyrannosaurus Rex to mind. Most of the names that we've come across throughout our years have deep and complex etymologies, with intricate spellings and pronunciations that encourage people to learn about them in detail. Many powerful names fit that bill to the letter, while many others are deceptively simple sounding and plain but, ultimately, dog owners looking to give their pets a powerful name will have many options to choose from either way.
