Saur was treated with all of the respect and decorum of more traditional kings during his three-year reign, and there were many tales that ascribed fantastical abilities and exceptional accouterments to the dog king.

He was said to live on the Idre Isle and have a mansion in Inderøy, near a place known now as Sakshaug. He was given a collar made of silver and a chain made of gold and, like other kings, he sat upon a high throne and signed documents, using his pawprint as a signature. When the weather was difficult or the road foul, he was carried on the shoulders of courtiers and he had his own herd of cattle. According to the lore, the choice turned out to be quite a good choice and the dog turned out to be a fairly popular ruler. Heimskringla, one of the Old Norse King’s Sagas, written by Snorri Sturluson at some point in the 13^th century, describes a dog that was, by virtue of witchcraft, gifted with the wisdom of three men and had the partial gift of speech as well; he was said to bark two of his words and speak every third.

Unfortunately, as the story goes, just three years after taking the throne, poor Saur was killed. Most stories lay the blame for his death at the feet of wolves who were attacking Saur’s cattle. It is said that when he went to their rescue he was torn apart by the pack.

The Danish have an almost identical story of a dog named Rakke, appointed by Swedish king Adils, albeit without the ability to speak, who was torn to death by a pack of wild dogs and King Gunnerus of Sweden appointed a different unnamed dog to the throne in another town in Norway. While accounts of Saur the Dog King are popular in Norway, and legends and facts do occasionally overlap, the stories relating to Saur the Dog King of Norway are taken as a fully fictionalized account.
