Dog Names Meaning Runner In Pop Culture
Bo, a male Portuguese Water Dog, rose quickly into the spotlight in 2008 when he was adopted by the Obama family while Barack Obama was president of the United States. The Obama's carefully chose Bo after months of people speculating what the "first pet" would be. Malia Obama suffers from allergies to many dogs so the family was limited to what breed they could choose. Portuguese Water dogs are said to be hypoallergenic which is why this breed was chosen. The family eventually got a second Portuguese Water Dog, this time a female named Sunny.
Originally named Charlie, Bo was born in Texas to a breeder. He was first adopted by another family but returned to the breeder after it didn't work out. The dog was a gift from Senator Kennedy; however, the family met with the dog several times before accepting the gift and deciding he was the right dog for them. While the Obamas had originally stressed that they wanted to adopt a dog from a shelter, they ultimately did not and many criticized them for this choice. However, Bo was the dog for them! The family immediately renamed Charlie and chose the name Bo after the singer Bo Diddley.
There are only a few tidbits of information about Bo's life inside the white house. It was released that his favorite food was tomatoes and that he did not know how to swim (despite being a Portuguese Water dog!). President Obama said that Bo would definitely be allowed in the Oval office and quoted Harry Truman when he said "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog". Bo lived in the white house for 8 years, the entire term of Obama's presidency and then moved along with the family.
