Introduction
There is something about a dog name beginning with "Ra" that just rolls off your tongue. Can't you picture yourself calling your dog…Rad! Raleigh! Rayla! Come here pup! It just sounds natural. While "Ra" names tend to be more masculine, there are also plenty of female "Ra" names to choose from as well. There are also "Ra" names from every ethnic background in case you are looking for a name with a specific heritage (maybe a nice Spanish name for that big Spanish Mastiff you just adopted?). With so many great "Ra" dog names, you are sure to find one that fits your pooch perfectly.
Dog Names that Start with 'Ra' in Pop Culture
Rags the dog was a war hero during the first world war. While he may not be the most current dog with an "Ra" name, he is certainly one worth celebrating. Rags was adopted by the US 1st Infantry Division in 1918 after a soldier, James Donovan, mistook him for a pile of rags. Rags was a mixed breed and he and Donovan became inseparable. Donovan trained Rags to work as an assistant to the troops in order to be able to keep him on base. Rags would run messages from the base camp to soldiers at the front lines. He even saved many lives when he delivered a vital message during the Meuse-Argonne attacks.
Rags imitated the soldiers and would drop to the ground when he heard shells firing. Soon Rags would drop to the ground before the soldiers as his acute hearing helped him hear the shots even before the troops. After noticing this behavior, his division men would observe him and be able to anticipate gunfire.
Rags was also a smart dog when it came to finding treats. He would walk the base sniffing each mess hall until deciding on which had the best food that day. He also frequently would visit the areas on base with the friendliest staff and avoid those who were not so welcoming. He was a truly clever pup!
During his time in battle, Rags was near bombings, deadly gasses, and ended up being partially blinded. However, he still persisted and did the jobs he was assigned. After the war, Rags retired with his handler, James Donovan, and eventually found a permanent home with Major Raymond Hardenbergh. Rags received many medals and awards for his time in the military and had several reunions with soldiers he served with after the war. He lived to a happy old age of 20.
Some other notable dogs with "Ra" names include Rainy, a German Shepherd who starred in the 2010 movie Cool Dog. Rainy is left behind when his family moves but finds his way to his new home in New York City. Raffles the Border Collie was another popular "Ra" dog who was in the animated movie Rover Dangerfield. "Ra" dogs are everywhere!
Dog Names that Start with 'Ra' Considerations
Pretty much any dog can be given an "Ra" name, there really is no best breed, color or gender dog which this name category fits best. While "Ra" names tend to be masculine, there are also plenty of female "Ra" dog names as well, they just may not be as common (creative names are so much more fun anyway!). While you should consider the color of your dog when contemplating a name like Raven (which means black bird) or the name Raya (which means bright light), there really is an "Ra" name that will suit any dog. A dog who loves to be out in the elements no matter what the weather could be called Rainy, or if they have a fair-weathered preference, Rainbow may suit them best. There are even some "Ra" names that are gender neutral such as Rathi (meaning one who enjoys the pleasures of the world). This is perfect if you are searching for a name before finding your new loyal pup - you'll have a name ready to go whether it’s a boy or girl!
