Introduction
There are several methods that people can use to select a name for their new canine companion. Many people choose to honor an individual that they cared about or admired, or look to a book, television show, or movie for inspiration while others are more likely to pick a name based on its definition. An alternative is to start their search with a specific letter or letters at either the beginning or the end of the name, such as the letters "Te", either to match another pet or person in the house, because the dog responds well to that particular sound, or because that set of letters has a specific meaning to the pet parent.
Dog Names that Start with 'Te' in Pop Culture
Wizard of Oz, released in 1939, followed the adventures of a little girl named Dorothy as she travels through a magical but dangerous land known as Oz. On the way, she meets a Scarecrow, a Cowardly Lion, and a Tin Man, but the most loyal of her friends is her canine companion that she brought with her from Kansas, a little terrier by the name of Toto, played by a purebred Cairn Terrier named Terry, a true Hollywood star in her own right.
Terry was born in 1933, and her first owners, a couple from Pasadena, CA, brought her to renowned animal trainer Carl Spitz, hoping to cure her of a carpet wetting problem and her anxiety. Although it only took a few weeks for the legendary trainer to solve the issue, it seems that Terry’s original owners didn’t have any faith that Carl would be able to housebreak the little dog. He tried to contact the couple, who were delinquent on their payments and discovered that their telephone line had been disconnected. Terry had been abandoned.
Carl and his wife, Alice, decided to keep the terrier as a family pet, but Terry was destined to be much more than that. When a studio executive visited the Spitz’s training center with Clark Gable to visit a canine actor by the name of Buck, a Saint Bernard that was slated to be in his upcoming movie, Call of the Wild, Terry caught their eye. Carl trained the pup and in 1934 she got her first role, a small part in the movie Ready for Love, shortly followed by a role in the movie Bright Eyes, alongside one of the most popular and famous of all child stars to date, Shirley Temple.
By the time that Terry was cast in the role of Toto in 1939, she was a veteran to the industry and had been featured in seven films, and after Wizard of Oz was released, she starred in another twelve full-length feature films, working with well-known Hollywood actors like Spencer Tracy, Joan Crawford, Henry Fonda, Hedy Lamarr, and Jack Benny. The canine acting world mourned Terry when she passed away on September 1st, 1945, and although her original resting place on Carl Spitz’s ranch was demolished in 1958, due to the creation of the Ventura Freeway, she was given a permanent memorial at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary. When Ventura Freeway expansion began in 2013, a leatherbound scrapbook containing Terry’s story, told from her point of view, was found by Willard Carroll, and published as a delightful autobiography entitled “I, Toto: The Autobiography of Terry, the Dog who was Toto.”
Dog Name that Starts with 'Te' Considerations
Choosing an appropriate name for your canine companion is an important early step in your role as a pet parent. A good name is typically easy to understand clearly and to differentiate from other commands, and one that the dog responds well to. The letters "T" and "e" at the beginning of the name give it a strong and distinctive sound that your dog will be able to quickly react to, and there are many strong and beautiful names in this category. One way of narrowing down a list of names that start with a specific letter or set of letters is to choose a name that describes the animal’s physical appearance. Names like Tetryl, referring to a yellowish compound, may be appropriate for a dog with a yellow or cream-colored coat, or Terell or Tetsu for a strong, powerful animal, while a name like Tegan, meaning beautiful, works for any dog that catches your eye. This list also has a number of names that may describe how your pup makes you feel, such as Teitr, meaning joyful, Terrwyn, meaning brave, or Teja, meaning radiant, as well as names that work for multiple dogs, such as Teoma and Teva, both of which mean twin.
