Introduction

The television show ER was a medical drama series that was originally created by Michael Crichton, the author of works such as The Andromeda Strain, Sphere, and Jurassic Park. It was based on Crichton’s time as a medical student and revolved around the doctors and nurses who worked at the fictional County General Hospital in Chicago, IL. The show was fast-paced and could go from merely intriguing to emotionally wrenching in a matter of seconds, and often did. Archie

Dr. Archibald Morris, better known as Archie, began his residency at County General as a stereotypical slacker. He was initially inept, did whatever could be done to avoid hard work, often requiring out by other residents, and was even caught smoking marijuana on the premises at one point, although the doctor who catches him dies in an accident before he can be reprimanded. Due to seniority and administrative ability, he is made Chief Resident in the eleventh season of the show, and his management varies wildly from micromanagement and delegation. While neither he nor the other staff at the hospital took his career trajectory seriously at first, his competent handling of a shooting situation that occurs in the ER alters both the outlook of the other staff members and more importantly of Archie himself. He becomes not only an attending physician, but he eventually garners a great deal of respect from the other staff members, becoming a doctor that other doctors come to for advice, a true healer.

Archibald RazzMa Tazz, also better known as Archie, was a Newfoundland dog in Camarillo, CA and although this particular Archie never went through medical school, he was also a healer. Archie was the founding therapy dog at Casa Pacifica, a center committed to assisting families and adolescents that have been affected by abuse, neglect, substance abuse, and other behavioral and mental health issues. He came to the center in 2007 and was certified in both therapy work and water rescue. He provided emotional support for the residents, mostly the children and teens, and was known to have endless patience with them. Children and adolescents read to him, played together with him in the quad, walked with him, swam with him in the pool, and sometimes cried into his fur; they loved him greatly, and he loved them in return. In order to educate others on the benefits of having a therapy dog on staff, Archie visited countless elementary students and made appearances on several national television shows including CBS’s Dog Tales and the Today Show and was even featured in a book. Although Archibald traveled over the rainbow bridge in 2015, his success paved the way for his nephews to become therapy dogs for Casa Pacifica as well, Baker in 2011 and Otis in 2014. A life-sized statue was erected for him at the Gardens of the World in Thousand Oaks, and even in death, Archie continues to contribute to the health and well-being of those at the Casa Pacifica through the Team Archie Fund, which helps to cover unexpected expenses that are not covered by normal insurance policies.
