The symbol that is used to represent the astrological sign of Taurus is the bull, a strong and tenacious animal that is not easily moved nor stopped if they do not want to be. General George Smith Patton, while not a Taurus, had a strong fondness for the breed of dog known as a Bull Terrier. Bull Terriers, like the typical Taurean, are calm and easy-going in most situations, with a strong protective instinct, but they also tend to be rather stubborn when pushed. It was in 1944 that General Patton acquired his closest canine companion, a Bull Terrier whose owner, an RAF pilot, never returned from his mission. General Patton changed the dog’s name from Punch to Willie, a name the dog shared with Taurean Willie Nelson. While many people speculated that Willie was short for William the Conqueror, other sources state that his full name was actually the much less dignified Willie Whiffle and he may have been named after a hungry young boy who ate his fill for the first time at a BBQ that Patton had once hosted.

The Terrier and the general took to each other immediately, Patton noting in his diary soon after he got the dog, “My bull pup took to me like a duck to the water.” Willie traveled everywhere with General Patton, and General Patton ensured that he was well cared for at all times, having dog tags made for him and even hosting a birthday party on Willie’s behalf, although Willie still had to be admonished on occasion. In one famous incident, General Eisenhower and his dog, a black Scottie dog by the name of Telek, came to visit General Patton. Willie was elsewhere when the generals sat down at the table with Telek at their feet, and when he returned to see an unexpected dog in his territory, he responded aggressively. It took four generals and a bucket of water to separate the two dogs, and when Eisenhower suggested that his dog be put away as it was Willie’s territory, Patton insisted that Telek outranked Willie, and so, following Army protocol, Willie would be confined to quarters. In December of 1945, after World War II had ended, General Patton died following a car accident in Germany and a forlorn Willie was sent to the United States to live with the general's wife and daughters, where he lived for another ten years until he too passed away in 1955.
