Karl Lagerfeld was one of the most influential creative directors and fashion designers that ever lived. He was one of the main players in the world of fashion design, and the world is devastated to have lost him after so long. However, Karl’s memory lives on, in each coat, bag, and dress that we wear, but also in the mention of his name. Therefore, the star of the day is a dog named Karl, who has a very hard and noble job.

We all know that testifying in court can be so stressful, especially for children who do not understand what is going on. They are often victims of abuse who have to relive their horrific memories on the stand, which can make them overwhelmed and unable to speak. That is where Karl jumps in. Karl is a therapy dog, a deaf boxer who happens to be an expert in calming children in stressful situations. The adorable dog works mostly in the Ninth Judicial Court of Florida, and he could not be more perfect for the job. A part of his job success is the fact that he is deaf, and therefore, unbothered by loud noises and the chaotic atmosphere of the courthouse. He walks the children to the stand, wearing his vest, and being all professional, and then sits by them until they have completed their testimonies.

Karl’s owner, Joanne Hart Rittenhouse said that most children would not give testimony or go through a deposition if a dog is not by their side, and Karl offers them that feeling of serenity, protection, and hope that they desperately need in their situation. Joanne taught Karl sign language, so he can take orders when needed, and even though no one thought so, he became a real child-friendly dog. He listens to their troubles, he never spills the secrets, and he offers companionship and love in the times when it is most needed. Children pet Karl when they give their testimonies, and they hug him and keep him by their side, which he happily accepts, and offers even more cuddles and kisses than they ask!

There is one more interesting thing about Karl, and about therapy dogs in general. Since Karl is not the only one, children get to choose which dog will accompany them to their deposition. Nine times out of ten, they choose Karl or another large dog, and the courthouse employees say that they always go for the biggest dog available. One child even asked if Karl would be able to protect her during the testimony, which, when you think about it, is so sad, and these kids at least have a big doggo to protect them from the horrors of the world.
