Introduction
India is a fascinating country in South Asia, the seventh largest by area and the second most populous country in the world, right after China! It is a place of many wonders and notable historical events, and it dates back to the 3rd millennium BC. It is a multicultural and a multilingual society and also a home to amazing flora and fauna, world wonders such as Taj Mahal, and amazing party destinations such as Goa on the west coast of India. If you have visited India and became enchanted with all its beauties, it is completely understandable that you are inspired to name your dog something India-related.
Indian Dog Names in Pop Culture
Back in the 90s things seemed to be much simpler. We had beepers, we wore high waisted jeans and big hoop earrings, and the quality of picture on the television was not as high quality as it is today. However, that did not stop anyone from making amazing films and creating a cult following with their creative endeavors. One of such films that might not have taken over the world, but that has definitely taken over India is Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! or better known as HAHK.
HAHK is an Indian musical romantic comedy released in 1994, starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit. Salman Khan played the role of Prem who lost his parents when he was very young. His brother Rajesh has a marriage arranged to a girl named Pooja, who has a sister named Nisha, played by Madhuri Dixit, and Nisha and Prem start bickering as soon as they are introduced. It is apparent that the two of them are made for each other and the rest of the movie is focused on their interesting love story.
However, as with any film, there were some ups and downs in Prem and Nisha’s relationship, that luckily got solved by the cutest cast member, the lovely doggo Tuffy! Tuffy is a white fluffy Pomeranian who had many important roles in this movie. He was an umpire in a cricket match and a best friend to the main character, Prem, the man in love. However, even though a career of an umpire does sound impressive and lucrative, Tuffy’s role was actually much more pivotal for the development of the story and the love between Nisha and Prem.
One day, Nisha’s sister Pooja sadly lost her life. Everyone was devastated by this, and Nisha took on the role of a mother to Pooja and Rajesh’s son. Their families found it necessary to marry Nisha to Rajesh to “replace” Pooja as a mother to their son, and some moments before the wedding, Nisha gives a heartbreaking letter to Tuffy so he can take it to Prem. In the letter, she expressed her love, but realized that she has to sacrifice it all for the well-being of Pooja’s baby, her nephew. However, smart little Tuffy takes the letter to Rajesh instead, who realizes that his brother and Nisha are in love and that they are sacrificing so much so he could be happy. He stops the wedding and brings Nisha and Prem together, who are then married, all thanks to a little fluffy Pomeranian who knew how to be in the right place at the right time!
Sweet little Tuffy was played by the adorable Redo who stole the hearts of the whole cast and crew of the movie. He was so adorable and lovely, that Madhuri Dixit actually adopted him after the shooting was over, so Nisha and Tuffy lived together forever in real life AND in the movie!
Indian Dog Name Considerations
The perfect name for your doggo is just around the corner! India, as an inspiration, gives you so many possibilities for a great moniker. You can take Indian toponyms as a base, you can get inspired by Bollywood movies, or you can just find popular names in this country and use them as the name for your new pup. If you choose toponyms, some interesting choices may be Mumbai, Chennai, or Pune, after huge cities in India. If your pup is a special princess her new name can be Kolkata or Agra, again, after two big cities in this country. Ganges is a strong and proud name, after the river Ganges, and Goa is a popular beach destination with many fantastic parties and spiritual gatherings happening there.
And then there are Indian names. Some of the most popular choices are Kiaan, which means king or ancient, Shiva, after the god, Sahil, which means guide, and Additri, another name for the goddess Lakshmi. Speaking of Hindu goddesses, a fantastic name can be Radha, Krishna’s companion; Tulsi, the goddess associated with the basil plant, or Sita, the incarnation of Lakshmi. The goddess Kali is a representation of Shakti and she is the soul liberator, and Parvati is the wife of Shiva and the protector of mothers.
