Introduction
Inuyasha, a Japanese manga series also done as an anime, is a popular show that launched back in November of 1996 and concluded in 2008! It begins with following Kagome Higurashi, a fifteen-year-old girl from Tokyo who falls into a well in her family’s shrine and magically gets transported five hundred years back in time to the Sengoku period. There, she meets Inuyasha, half human, half dog-demon, also known as yokai. Inuyasha joins forces with the girl and helps look for the shards of the Jewel of Four Souls. It’s particularly interesting that Inuyasha has pointy silver Akita ears on the top of his head, because of his heritage. So, basically, he is a perfect topic for today!
Inuyasha Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Inuyasha is a manga and an anime heavily focused on the theme of dogs. The main character’s name even means Dog Demon! However, his form is more humanoid, except for the pair of fluffy Akita ears he sports on the top of his head, above his luscious, white hair. But there is one character in Inuyasha whose true form is the form of a canine, and that is Inuyasha’s father, Inu no Taisho.
He is also known as Great Dog General or Great Dog Demon, and was a very powerful and wise Inu-Daiyokai. He was very well known and universally feared all across Japan. He had two sons, Inuyasha, the main character of the show, and Sesshomaru, his first born who was actually a full Inu-Daiyokai. Inu no Taisho’s story is a fascinating one. He died defending his new born child Inuyasha and his human wife Izayoi from Takemaru, a Samurai lord who fell in love with Izayoi and got so jealous that he wanted to murder her while she was giving birth to Inuyasha. Toga (Inu no Taisho’s nickname) rushed to save her and the baby and in that moment Takemaru appeared and attempted to kill him instead for taking away Izayoi, the woman he was obsessed with. He lost an arm in the battle but did not give up and wanted to take down Toga and his family once and for all. They both lost their lives when the palace they were in collapsed on them, but luckily, Izayoi and baby Inuyasha were saved.
Toga’s heroic acts were not forgotten. Even after his life, he was still so important and valued that his tomb can only be accessed through a black pearl, a precious gem that makes a path between the real and spirit world, and is placed in Inuyasha’s right eye. Through this, Inuyasha and his brother Sesshomaru can see their father’s true form – a giant dog in a suit of armor. Out of his huge fang, a powerful sword was forged and it is known as Tessaiga. The sword repels the non-humans who have malicious thoughts towards humans, and therefore Inuyasha was the one who inherited it, even though he is the younger brother.
Toga was brave indeed, but he was also quite influential as he used to be the lord of Japan’s western provinces, gained allies among the yokai, but also managed to stay humble and remain fond and loving towards humans. He even fell in love with one, much to the dismay of his demon community, but that never stopped him. That is why he was the most powerful of Inu-Daiyokai!
Inuyasha Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Inuyasha is one of those anime and manga series that features a lot of characters, all of whom are well-developed and have some sort of a back story you can find interesting and compelling. If you are a fan, you know that it can be quite hard to choose only ONE among the hundreds that inspire you, but this can also be a great way to convince your girlfriend, boyfriend, sibling, or best friend to watch your favorite anime with you and help you pick the name. It’s for a good cause after all so they cannot say no, right?
So, if you feel inspired, you've got your popcorn or ramen ready, pen and paper in hand and your lovely new pup in your lap, time to get to naming! You can start with Inuyasha, after the Dog Demon, main protagonist, and a cross between a demon and a human who holds the Black Pearl in his right eye. Another option is to name your princess after Kagome Higurashi, a girl born with Shinkon no Tama, otherwise known as the Jewel of Four Souls inside her, who pulled back in time by 500 years when she fell in a well and met Inuyasha.
