Introduction
Irish Wolfhound Dog Names in Pop Culture
Before Domhnall could take his place beside the guard at public events, he had to learn how to do the job right. This involved not only learning his manners but also to tolerate the music of the regimental band and how to be around the mounted horses without being scared, or without scaring the horses. He had to learn to be calm in the streets of London, not freak out at the sound of bagpipes, and how to act at official ceremonies.
Today, Domhnall is kept busy. He participates in many distinguished events, like the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace in London. Like any good soldier Domhnall wears a uniform when in public. It consists of a scarlet coat and a solid silver collar. Domhnall has some time to relax, too. Like a lot of folks, he has a penchant for Guinness when he's not on duty.
It's not easy being in such a prestigious position. Domhnall must be on his best behavior at all times when in the public eye. His handler, Drummer David Steel, is in charge of making sure Domhnall is always putting his best foot forward. That means the best in care for Domhnall because Irish Wolfhounds have short life spans (rarely past 10 years) and are prone to a number of health issues, including hip dysplasia and bone cancer. Fortunately, Domhnall's veterinary care and food is supplied by the government. As of 1961, the mascot was admitted to the official club of Army mascots. Before that, the regiment had to foot the bill.
Domhnall works hard for the Irish regiment and is proud to do it. Not only is he their mascot, he's an ambassador to the world for Irish Wolfhounds everywhere.
