As mentioned before, Warwick's backstory was overhauled back in 2017 to make the character more sympathetic and fleshed out. Before the update, Warwick was a remorseless kidnapper who willfully drank an untested and volatile potion to change from an average man to a bloodthirsty beast. But as of 2017, Warwick's background has been flipped on its head, to a degree. Before his transformation, Warwick still had a criminal past. But, as per his updated background, Warwick had tried to put that life of crime behind him and live an upstanding, moral life as a good man. And he was able to do that for a time, until he crossed paths with the ruthless alchemist, Singed. 

Singed assailed Warwick, took him back to his lab, and proceeded to conduct painful experiments on the man for weeks and weeks on end. Singed crudely inserted cold, brass claws inside of Warwick's hands, then the mad scientist surgically attached a chemical chamber onto Warwick's back (which was also forcibly integrated with the helpless man's nervous system,) all for the sake of awakening "the beast within" Warwick. Singed thought that the excruciating pain he'd put Warwick through would be the necessary catalyst to evoke Warwick's transformation. But unfortunately for the latter, Singed was wrong. 

Instead of pain, death was the necessary catalyst that would forever change Warwick; once the reformed criminal had finally succumbed to Singed's experiments, the chemical chamber that was bonded with Warwick's nervous system was able to physically and mentally transform Warwick into a full fledged werewolf. For a time after his transformation, Warwick hunted indiscriminately. But after a while, Warwick's conscious got the better of him; the desire to do good still persisted in Warwick's chem addled mind and it urged him to direct his unrelenting savagery and blood-lust at the criminals of Zuan, making him something of a dark avenger for the people of the City of Iron and Glass.
