Introduction
You can't think of video games, and not think about Metal Gear Solid. The franchise has blown up over the years, with Kojima's brilliance growing with it. And it's no surprise, really. There's plot twists, moments you don't quite grasp, men who float in the sky, and plenty of first-person shooting to be had. So, it's no wonder that now that you're thinking of adopting a new dog, you want to showcase your love for one of your favorite video game series of all time. To make it easier, here are some ideas, predominantly focusing on the first Metal Gear, to get you started.
Metal Gear Solid Dog Names in Pop Culture
D-Dog, the great military canine! Surprisingly, he didn't make an appearance until Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, but boy is he a favorite. To obtain him and claim him as a new buddy and pal, you had three options: go north of Da Wialo Kallai in Mission 3, go south of the Eastern Communications Post in Mission 4, or go south of the Wakh Sind Barracks deployment area in Mission 5.
Clearly, this is all fairly early in the game, so you get to spend a good portion of time playing around with D-Dog once you find him. And if you didn't even want to wait that long, you could search the areas during Free Roam Mode Side Ops missions and try to find him. Whatever course you took, you'd begin to hear these faint little puppy barks. And depending on how close you were, you would need to return to the LZ several times to locate him.
Once you did, you'd melt. It was this adorable grey, furry ball of love with a drooling mouth. He looked to be a Siberian Husky, but it's never quite been clarified. What we do know, however is that he was born in 1984, and quickly got training as an attack dog, thanks to Venom Snack and Ocelot.
One of the Diamond Dogs, D-Dog blended in like no other, eye-patch and all. Presumably an orphan, Snake finds him with a missing eye already. He was taken by Fulton Recovery to the Diamond Dogs Mother Base, the place he'd call home for the rest of his life. The great thing about D-Dog is that although he came from the saddest and most humble of beginnings, he grew up to be one helpful companion. With 12,000 health and 6,000 stamina, he could easily keep up with Venom Snake.
He would neutralize enemies, hide when needed, and help spot enemies so the player could mark them to keep track of them in the dark. Perfect for infiltrating a camp, taking down enemies, and securing the camp. Of course, once the mission was completed successfully, D-Dog would let out a victorious howl, as if to say "We did it!"
But not everything was all work and no play for D-Dog and Snake. When Snake hadn't showered for a while, D-Dog would run ahead of him upon returning to Mother Base and shake his head in disgust. Then, he'd cover his nose with his paws.
Metal Gear Solid Dog Name Considerations
Naming a new dog is really a matter of choosing what to call a new best friend. Dogs are loyal creatures, filled with love and devotion. Each one of them is unique and brings something new to the table. These differences span more than just breed and age, however. They truly span everything, from color and shape, to personality traits. One dog may like to sleep by your feet, but another will happily take over the living room couch and throws.
When naming your dog, it's important to keep these differences in mind, because it's what makes your dog unique. More so, it just might be the name-defining moment! The moment when you take a look at your dog and say "You are totally Solid Snake."
Another way to approach it is a little more linear: simply weighing different character names. Maybe you have a good four or five characters that you love from the Metal Gear Solid series. Clearly, one of them needs to be selected, because they're your favorite characters. And maybe, your dog really acts like one of them, or even two of them. Maybe you're never quite sure of the dog's motives, just like with Revolver Ocelot.
