He makes his first appearance in the 4^th book (and 4^th season), when Young Ian is in Charleston in June 1767. Rollo’s stories appear throughout five books of the Outlander series.

Rollo resulted from the accidental crossing of an Irish Wolfhound and a wolf, and Young Ian won this wolf-dog in a dice gamble. Rollo is a very loyal and protective dog despite his wild ancestry, and he is very protective of Ian. Rollo is fully capable of hunting for his meals, and defends himself and his people quite well.
