Introduction

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of gaming's oldest mascots and one of Sega Games' ambassadors in many respects. Sonic's first game, aptly titled Sonic the Hedgehog, came out all the way back on June 23rd of 1991 for Sega's own gaming console, the Sega Genesis. In the Archie comic books, Sonic has included the likes of Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot D'Coolette, and Silver the Hedgehog into his close circle of friends. Ben "Mutt" Muttski is one of those characters from the Archie comics that has made a big impression on readers over the years. Ben holds the distinction of being the most prominent canine character in the entire Sonic franchise, Werehog Sonic notwithstanding.

It's hard to say whether or not Ben is based on any real-world dog breeds; some fans think that Ben looks a lot like a Boxer or a Jack Russell Terrier but it's hard to definitively say which breed inspired his overall design. To further complicate the matter, Ben has yellow fur with brown spots and a very short, pointed tail. Ben always seems to have an upbeat and happy personality, no matter the scenario; even when things seems incredibly bleak, Ben will often adopt a can do attitude and try to cheer others up around him. Ben's happy disposition is further complemented by his tendency to wag his tail when he's happy. Ben's cheerful demeanor perfectly contrasts (and somewhat compliments) the more serious mindset of his mentor Charles the Hedgehog. Ben has been Charles' apprentice for a very long time and the two of them have formed a close bond despite the differences of their personalities.

In the end, we feel that you should definitely consider naming your dog after Ben Muttski if you're a Sonic fan because he exemplifies a lot of the traits that people have come to love Sonic for over the years; Ben has a "never say die" attitude and always strives to cheer others up, even at the darkest of hours. Ben is also a very loyal dog and a big supporter of the Freedom Fighters of Mobius (the world Sonic and the others hail from.)
